Rothenfels is located on the Main. The present-day town hall stands in the town center; half-timbered houses and townhouses shape the streetscape along the main street, many dating from the late 16th century. The Julius Hospital is also part of the architectural history of this period. Rothenfels therefore offers a clear historical focus for planning your trip. The wider Main-Spessart destination also offers hiking and cultural experiences.

The Town Hall, Hospital and Their Historical Context

The present-day town hall in the center of Rothenfels was planned from 1596 at the initiative of Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn and built in 1598/1599. The town coat of arms above the main portal bears the year 1595 and was made earlier. The Julius Hospital was established as a foundation by the territorial ruler. Its building was constructed in 1597–1599; the founding charter for the hospital foundation was issued in 1601. Construction of the town hall and hospital overlapped in 1598/1599, while the coat of arms is dated earlier and the charter was issued later.

Half-Timbered Houses on the Main Street

Magnificent half-timbered houses and townhouses line the main street; many were built toward the end of the 16th century. This streetscape complements the architectural history of the town hall and Julius Hospital with buildings from the same period. The town’s history can thus be experienced both through individual institutions and through the houses along the main street.

Culture and Crafts in Main-Spessart

The cultural attractions in the wider Main-Spessart destination also have their own distinct focus. The Historic Aschfeld Church Castle is a refuge and defensive castle dating from the 15th century. Parts of the fortifications are now used as museum spaces, showcasing historic defensive weapons as well as rural life and work. The Homburg Paper Mill Museum offers a different perspective: a hand papermaking workshop in its fifth generation still produces fine handmade paper today. The museum preserves fully and authentically maintained production facilities from the 19th and 20th centuries, living quarters of the papermaking family and a demonstration workshop. The history of fortifications and papermaking offer different ways to explore regional culture.

Landscape and Seasonal Attractions in Main-Spessart

In the wider Main-Spessart destination, vineyards, water and forests shape the landscape.
