Discover Himmelstadt
Accommodation in Himmelstadt
Himmelstadt offers several reasons to visit: the seasonal Christmas Post Office in the town hall, a wine trail focusing on table grapes, and historic landmarks. The wider travel destination of Main-Spessart also brings its own nature, hiking and cultural themes to your plans.
At Christmas: the Christmas Post Office
For more than 30 years, Himmelstadt has hosted Bavaria’s only Christmas Post Office in the town hall during the Christmas season. Every year, around 40 volunteers answer more than 80,000 letters to the Christ Child from all over the world. Its seasonal nature makes the post office a special reason to visit: if it is the focus of your trip, plan your visit for the Christmas season and check current visiting dates in advance.
Discover table grapes on the wine trail
The local Winegrowers’ and Viticulture Association created the Ecological Wine Trail. It introduces different table grape varieties and shows how they can be grown: in containers or trained on a trellis against a house wall. The trail also invites visitors to sample selected table grapes and learn about them. This combines tasting with a closer look at specific varieties and growing methods; its horticultural focus sets the trail apart from a simple walk through vineyards.
Lime kiln and Deep Well: historic landmarks
The Himmelstadt lime kiln dates to the mid-19th century. Information panels explain how it worked and was rebuilt, as well as the story of lime burner Josef Hemmelmann. The Deep Well was built around 1730 and is now a registered archaeological monument. Together, the two landmarks offer different historical perspectives: the lime kiln tells of its function, reconstruction and a traditional story, while the well is a monument with a known date.
Main-Spessart as a wider travel destination
In the wider travel destination of Main-Spessart, vineyards, water and forests come together to create an appealing holiday region. The Main Hiking Trail is around 500 kilometres long; just under 100 kilometres of it run through the district of Main-Spessart, connecting Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. Another way to explore the area is the Spessart Nature Park, which offers everything from short walks to hikes lasting several days. The Spessart Trails bear the “Wanderbares Deutschland” quality seal.
The wider travel destination of Main-Spessart also offers its own cultural history. Karlstadt’s old town, surrounded by walls, towers and gates, was founded around 1200 and preserves buildings and structures that have stood for more than seven centuries. In Homburg, the Paper Mill Museum features fully and authentically preserved production facilities from the 19th and 20th centuries, the living quarters of the papermaking family, and a demonstration workshop. A hand papermaking workshop still produces fine handmade paper there today, now in its fifth generation.
Choose the right reason for your trip
The main attractions suit different interests: the Christmas Post Office is open during the Christmas season, the wine trail focuses on table grapes and how they are grown, while the lime kiln and Deep Well add to the town’s history.
