Langquaid offers several specific themes for a stay: cultural and historical exhibitions, preserved monastery remains in Paring, recurring festivals and circular trails. You can plan your choices around whether you are more interested in local history, an event date or trails of different lengths. The following topics provide an overview of these local highlights.

Cultural history in Langquaid and Paring

The interactive “ErLebnis Geschichte” museum in the Kastnerhaus features the permanent exhibitions “4000 Jahre versteckt – der Schatz von Langquaid” and “zu Baiern loblich gefreyt – Langquaid und die Wittelsbacher”. The two titles emphasize different aspects: the first links a span of 4,000 years with the treasure of Langquaid, while the second focuses on Langquaid and the Wittelsbach dynasty. In one building, a treasure theme and the Wittelsbachs are presented as distinct exhibition topics. If you are interested in local history, you can include the two permanent exhibitions as separate highlights in your travel plans.

Another historical connection can be found in Paring, in the northeast of Langquaid. Remains of a once extensive monastery complex, grouped around St. Michael’s Church, have been preserved on Klosterberg. The church is therefore the focal point of the complex. Unlike the exhibitions in the Kastnerhaus, this site is about the surviving remains of a former monastery. The two historical highlights thus differ in form: permanent exhibitions on the one hand, and the remains of a once extensive complex on the other.

Festivals on different dates

In Hellring, north of Langquaid, the pilgrimage festival takes place every year on the second Sunday in October. The Langquaid Citizens’ Festival is a traditional celebration held every two years in June. The festivals therefore take place in different months and follow different schedules. If you would like to plan your stay around one of the festivals, check the exact event date for your travel year.

Circular trails starting at Marktweiher

Three circular trails start in the Marktweiher recreation area: the nature trail is about three kilometres long, the forest education trail is six kilometres, and the legends and folklore trail is about 15 kilometres. All three start at the same point and are circular routes, so their stated lengths can be compared directly. Their names also highlight different themes: nature, forest, and legends and folklore. When choosing a trail, you can therefore consider both its stated theme and its length.

Landscape and pilgrimage route

In addition to the circular trails, the wet meadows in the valley of the GroĂźe Laber are another feature of the natural landscape: they provide a habitat for storks. Every year, a pair of storks nests above the rooftops of Langquaid. This brings together two distinct natural features: a wetland habitat in the valley and an annual nesting activity above Langquaid.

Langquaid also has another route connection via the European pilgrimage route VIA NOVA. The market town of Langquaid and the pilgrimage church of St. Ottilia lie along its 115-kilometre Monasteries & Churches Loop. This adds a specific pilgrimage-route connection to Langquaid alongside its local circular trails.
