When looking for a hotel in Riedenburg, your planned activities can help guide your choice: castle and town history, flight demonstrations and hiking destinations each offer a different focus. Rosenburg is Riedenburg’s landmark. Other attractions include the ruins of Tachenstein and Rabenstein, a late Baroque parish church, and activities that explore history and nature from different perspectives. This can help you decide whether you would prefer to centre your stay around the old town, hiking trails or a particular attraction.

Riedenburg

Rosenburg and the history of the old town

At Rosenburg, flight demonstrations let you see golden eagles, white-tailed eagles, vultures, kites and falcons in free flight at close range. Visitors can explore the castle’s history and learn about falconry at the Rosenburg Castle Museum. The demonstrations focus on the birds in free flight, while the museum covers history and falconry.

For an introduction to the historic old town, the “Burggraf von Riedenburg” offers a guided tour through its streets, sharing entertaining and fascinating details about the town’s history. It adds stories about the town’s past to the sights themselves. The Kristallmuseum Riedenburg offers special guided tours for children, explaining the world of gemstones to them. The Catholic Parish Church of St. John the Baptist adds its own architectural highlight: this late Baroque gem features large Baroque windows framed by stucco ornamentation.

Castle ruins and views

At Tachenstein Castle Ruins, the remains of the keep stand about 10 metres high. The structure was probably built in the 12th or 13th century and was already mentioned as a ruin in the 16th century. The construction date is an estimate; the early reference to it as a ruin is a separate fact. A viewing platform at the ruins offers panoramic views of Riedenburg’s old town and the surrounding Jura hills. You can explore Tachenstein more closely on a hike along the Three Castles Trail.

Rabenstein Castle Ruins are the oldest castle complex in Riedenburg and can also be explored more closely on a hike along the Three Castles Trail. The two sites therefore appeal to different interests: Tachenstein combines surviving remains, a cautiously qualified history of its construction and a viewpoint; Rabenstein stands out as Riedenburg’s oldest castle complex.

Hiking trails and other activities

The Altmühltal Panorama Trail runs through the Trockenklamm gorge near Einthal. Another scenic circular hiking trail leads from Riedenburg through the “Klamm und Kastlhäng” nature reserve to Prunn Castle. Sure-footedness is required on the section through the gorge. Keep this in mind when choosing between a hike and the other outings.

The AltmĂĽhltal Archaeology Park comprises a well-signposted route that is 40 kilometres long in total, with 18 stops to explore on foot or by bike. Stops 8 to 15 are in the municipality of Riedenburg. The park therefore offers a longer route than a single hike and can be explored in different ways.

In the district of Haidhof, 2 kilometres from Riedenburg, you’ll find the “AltmühlBob,” with a summer toboggan run more than 1,000 metres long. The Teufelsfelsen in the district of Jachenhausen offers a different kind of experience: when wind conditions are suitable, visitors can watch hang gliders take off from an 8-metre-long wooden ramp into the Altmühltal. The ramp is 500 metres above sea level, and the drop to the valley is about 180 metres. Wind is explicitly a condition for being able to watch the launches here.
