Painten: Forests, Panoramic Views and Nature Experiences
Accommodation in Painten
Painten offers several natural attractions and hiking options to consider when planning your trip: panoramic views from the Jura plateau, the Painten Forest, the nature experience area in Tangrintel, and trails with different routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Painten, you can plan your stay around whether open landscapes, forest sections, individual nature stops, or a particular trail route are important to you.
Forest, Plateau and Hiking Trails
The Painten Forest is one of the largest contiguous forest areas in the AltmĂĽhltal Nature Park. The Jura plateau near Painten offers panoramic views. Painten Circular Hiking Trail 1 is an easy route across the Jura heights between Painten and Kelheim. Along the way, flowering meadows alternate with the shady Painten Forest. The trail therefore combines open landscapes with forest sections.
The Fossil Loop offers a different experience. This leisurely hike crosses the Jura plateau near Painten and continues through open countryside to Mantlach and Netzstall. Along the way, there are repeated views of the Painten quarry, while the open terrain affords panoramic views stretching to the horizon. Compared with Circular Hiking Trail 1, this route places greater emphasis on open scenery and views.
Nature Experience Area in Tangrintel
The nature experience area in Tangrintel is freely accessible. It includes a barefoot path, an herb garden, a pile of fieldstones, an insect hotel, and an amphitheater with seating tiers made of Jura stone. This means you will find several different features in one place, rather than just a single natural attraction.
Typical plants of nutrient-poor grasslands and ruderal sites, such as those found around Painten, grow in the herb garden. The barefoot path offers sensory experiences with your eyes closed. The garden’s plants and the experience of the path therefore provide two distinct focal points within the area.
More Routes and Starting Points
The Pure Pleasure Trail runs between Kelheim, Ihrlerstein, and Painten. On the section from Painten toward Gasthaus GlashĂĽtte, it follows trails and gravel sections. This is a more specific description for choosing your route than the meadow, forest, and open countryside features of the hiking trails.
The starting points also differ: The Fossil Loop begins at the market square in Painten and initially heads north along Schmidgasse. By contrast, the Painten Mushroom Discovery Trail starts in the village district of Maierhofen, at the intersection of HauptstraĂźe and ForststraĂźe. If you take the starting point into account when planning, you can distinguish between these two trails by where they begin.
The Wider Destination of Kelheim
Kelheim is another destination to consider as part of the wider region. The northern part of the Kelheim district, including Kelheim, Essing, and Riedenburg, lies within the Altmühltal Nature Park. The “Weltenburger Enge, Hirschberg and Altmühlleiten” nature reserve, located in Kelheim, includes the Danube Gorge. There are eleven hiking trails in the Weltenburger Enge nature reserve. These natural attractions and hiking options in Kelheim complement the local trails around Painten with additional regional aspects.
