Saal a.d. Donau can be explored in different ways: through a Palm Sunday tradition, cultural and historical circular routes, and cycling connections in several directions. These topics offer various starting points for planning your stay—from an annual religious event to routes through the town and cycling trails in the surrounding area.

Culture and Local History on Two Circular Routes

Since 1996, a procession of life-size wooden figures has wound through Saal a.d. Donau on Palm Sunday. It commemorates the story of the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. If you are interested in religious customs and their visual representation, the procession is a notable local landmark. Its recurring date may also be a factor when planning a stay.

The Marterlweg Saal a.d. Donau is a circular route through the town and shady woodland. It leads to 14 typical Bavarian wayside shrines, known as Marterl. The shrines in and around Saal have been carefully restored and preserved by hand. The route thus combines a walk through the town and woodland with visits to these small religious monuments.

The Saaler Spaziergang takes a different approach: this cultural and historical circular route runs from Obersaal through Untersaal, past historic architectural monuments and cultural sites, and back to the town center. The two circuits therefore differ mainly in their themes. The Marterlweg focuses on the wayside shrines and the transition between the town and shady woodland; the Saaler Spaziergang highlights the architectural monuments and cultural sites along its route.

Plan Your Journey and Cycling Routes

Saal an der Donau railway station is on the Regensburg–Ingolstadt railway line. This provides a specific point of reference when planning a journey by train; please check the current timetable for individual train connections.

From Saal, you can ride the Danube Cycle Path, as well as well-signposted cycling routes towards Abensberg and the Hallertau and into the AltmĂĽhl Valley. These directions offer cyclists various destinations to consider when planning their tours. By contrast, the Marterlweg and Saaler Spaziergang are local circular routes through Saal, combining a walk with their own cultural and historical themes.

Kelheim as the Wider Regional Context

The northern part of Kelheim district, including Kelheim, Essing and Riedenburg, lies within the Altmühltal Nature Park, in the wider destination area of Kelheim. In the south, Abensberg, Neustadt an der Donau, Biburg, Rohr i. NB and Mainburg are part of the Hallertau, considered the world’s largest contiguous hop-growing region. These regional connections give the Kelheim destination its own landscape and agricultural themes, distinct from the local routes and events in Saal.

The “Weltenburger Enge, Hirschberg und Altmühlleiten” nature reserve in Kelheim includes the Danube Gorge. There are eleven hiking trails in the Weltenburger Enge nature reserve. The Befreiungshalle Kelheim is also part of the wider destination: King Ludwig I commissioned it as a memorial to the victorious battles against Napoleon in the Wars of Liberation from 1813 to 1815.
