When staying in Wildenberg, it is worth distinguishing the municipality’s sights from destinations elsewhere in the Kelheim district. Locally, the focus is on a Late Gothic church and a castle highlighted by the municipality; the wider travel area also offers hiking, cycling, and cultural attractions. You can first explore local sights, then include other interests in your trip.

Sights in the municipality of Wildenberg

The parish church of St. Andrew in PĂĽrkwang is one of the sights in the municipality of Wildenberg. PĂĽrkwang is part of the municipality. The Late Gothic church is a red-brick building, and its 46-metre-high tower is visible from far away. It offers culturally minded travellers a distinctive architectural landmark. The municipality also counts Wildenberg Castle among its landmarks and sights. Together, the church and castle provide a local focus on sacred architecture and a castle designated as a landmark.

If you are travelling with children, it is also worth noting that the municipality has a public playground for children. This adds another local amenity to the cultural sights, without requiring you to plan a particular itinerary.

Trails and regional orientation

A walking and cycling path is part of the Kelheim district’s cycle route network. A shared path for pedestrians, cyclists, and agricultural vehicles runs alongside federal highway B299 through the municipalities of Wildenberg and Siegenburg. On 14 August 2026, the State Building Authority officially opened the second construction phase. The route is therefore characterised both by its use for pedestrian and cycle traffic and by additional agricultural traffic.

The landscapes also vary across the Kelheim district. The northern part, including Kelheim, Essing, and Riedenburg, lies within Altmühltal Nature Park. The southern part includes Abensberg, Neustadt an der Donau, Biburg, Rohr i. NB, and Mainburg; it is part of the Hallertau, considered the world’s largest continuous hop-growing region. Nature park landscapes and hop growing thus offer distinct themes for exploring the region.

Nature and culture in the Kelheim district

The “Weltenburger Enge, Hirschberg und Altmühlleiten” nature reserve, located in Kelheim, includes the unique Danube Gorge. There are eleven hiking trails in the protected area. One specifically measured hike covers 13 kilometres from Essing to the Danube Gorge: the route passes over the Tatzlwurm, by the Klausen Caves, and along the Celtic Wall. The figure of eleven hiking trails refers to the nature reserve; 13 kilometres is the length of this particular route.

The AltmĂĽhltal Archaeology Park stretches for 39 kilometres and comprises 18 stops between Kelheim, Essing, Riedenburg, and Dietfurt. Its subject matter spans the period from Neanderthals to the Celts. Most stops are directly along the AltmĂĽhltal Cycle Route, bringing archaeological themes and a cycling route together in one regional attraction.

Other cultural landmarks add to the range of themes: Prunn Castle is known as the place where an original manuscript of the Nibelungenlied was found. Kelheim is also home to the Liberation Hall, commissioned by King Ludwig I. It is a memorial to the victorious battles against Napoleon during the Wars of Liberation from 1813 to 1815.

The Kelheim district also features long-distance routes. One stage of the East Bavarian Way of St. James runs from Kelheim to Weltenburger Enge. The Danube Cycle Path passes through Weltenburg and Kelheim; in Kelheim, the old town and the Liberation Hall are along the route. If you plan to ride the Danube Cycle Path, check current route conditions before setting off.
