Niederleierndorf combines pilgrimage traditions, historic buildings, and seasonal activities. Its attractions range from the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary and traces of Gitting Castle to the outdoor swimming pool. You can tailor your stay to your historical, religious, or scenic interests.

Pilgrimage Church and Pilgrim Routes

Niederleierndorf is a popular place of pilgrimage. The present-day Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1740 to replace a medieval predecessor; the lower part of its tower has been preserved. A large ceiling painting in the nave is dedicated to the story of the miraculous image venerated there. The church’s architectural history and pilgrimage tradition come together in its different parts.

The Laabertal Pilgrimage Route leads directly to Niederleierndorf and the Catholic Pilgrimage and Curacy Church of the Assumption of Mary. As an art-history tour, it visits pilgrimage sites in the Laber Valley and the Hallertau hop-growing region. Check the conditions for your tour before setting out.

The pilgrimage dates also offer guidance on when to visit: the Feast of the Assumption of Mary is celebrated on August 15 with a festive church service and a procession through Niederleierndorf. In May, rogation processions travel from Schierling to Niederleierndorf. If you are planning to attend one of these events, ask the parish about current dates and specific arrangements.

Historic Buildings and Traces of Gitting Castle

The former administrative building of Gitting Castle at Wiesenweg 1 is a two-story building with a gabled roof, dating from the 18th century. Its core is probably older; the building was altered from the 19th century onward. Another example is the former benefice house at HauptstraĂźe 12: a two-story building with a hipped roof and a framed portal, dating from around the mid-18th century. The two buildings differ in their roof shapes and architectural design.

Gitting Castle also has archaeological and landscape features. The medieval castle site known as “Schloss Gitting” is listed as an archaeological monument. The north section of the moat and slight rises in the ground remain from the former castle complex between Oberleierndorf and Niederleierndorf. These traces of the former complex differ from the surviving buildings, whose architectural features are still visible.

Landscape and Seasonal Activities

Kelheim District protects the “Niedermoor south of Niederleierndorf,” together with the “Sippenauer Moor” and “Goldau,” as landscape areas shaped and influenced by water. This group of landscapes includes fens, oxbow lakes, and floodplain landscapes. The area is therefore also part of a wider landscape context that extends beyond its architectural and pilgrimage history.

Niederleierndorf outdoor swimming pool is heated and includes a non-swimmer area, a toddler pool, a small water slide, two swings, a table-tennis table, a sandbox, and a kiosk. It operates seasonally. Check opening dates and facilities before your trip.

At Hauptstraße 8 in Langquaid-Niederleierndorf, the Zachhof is a farm café with a beer garden. Check the latest opening information if you plan to visit.

More Attractions in the Wider Langquaid Destination

In the wider Langquaid destination, the interactive “ErLebnis Geschichte” Museum in the Kastnerhaus features the permanent exhibitions “4,000 Years Hidden – The Langquaid Treasure” and “Freed to Bavaria’s Glory – Langquaid and the Wittelsbachs.” In Paring, northeast of Langquaid, remains of a once extensive monastery complex, arranged around St. Michael’s Church, have been preserved on Klosterberg.

The three circular trails in the wider Langquaid destination can also be distinguished by length. The nature trail is about three kilometers long, the forest educational trail six kilometers, and the Legends and Folktales Trail about 15 kilometers; all three start at the Marktweiher local recreation area. This offers a choice ranging from a shorter loop to a considerably longer route. Markt Langquaid and the Pilgrimage Church of St. Ottilia are also on the 115-kilometer Monasteries and Churches Route of the European VIA NOVA pilgrimage trail.

In Hellring, north of Langquaid, a pilgrimage festival is held every year on the second Sunday in October. Langquaid’s Bürgerfest is celebrated every two years in June. The wet meadows in the valley of the Great Laber provide a habitat for storks; a pair of storks nests above the rooftops of Langquaid every year. If you are traveling to attend a festival, check the specific event dates.
