When planning a hike in Zenting, it is helpful to first compare the approximate route lengths and starting points. An edition of the Sonnenwald hiking map, apparently published in 2019, describes three routes connected with Zenting. Since the information comes from this older edition, it is best to check your specific tour plans against a current hiking map.

Hiking Routes and Starting Points

At approximately 8.5 km, the Panoramarunde is the shortest of the three routes described. It runs from Zenting via Daxstein and back to Zenting. The approximately 11 km Brotzeit-Runde starts and ends in Ranfels and passes through Zenting. At approximately 12 km, the Lindenweg is the longest of the three routes; it starts and ends in Zenting. A detour to the “Kleiner Aschenstein” viewpoint is possible.

If you want to start and finish in Zenting, the Panoramarunde and Lindenweg differ mainly in their approximate length; the Lindenweg also offers the option of a detour. The Brotzeit-Runde, by contrast, starts and ends in Ranfels, even though it passes through Zenting. This makes it possible to choose a route based on the preferred starting points and approximate length, without treating the different routes as if they were the same.

Nature in the Wider Destination of Freyung-Grafenau

The Bavarian Forest National Park extends into the district of Freyung-Grafenau and opened on October 7, 1970, as Germany’s first national park. According to the 2024 zoning map, 75.37 percent of its area is designated as natural zones. These details provide a distinct regional context for nature-related topics in the wider destination of Freyung-Grafenau.

In the Buchberger Leite wild-stream gorge, steep rock ridges force the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe into a deep, narrow channel. Remnants of primeval forest have survived in the gorge’s moss- and fern-rich woodlands. An eight-kilometer themed hiking trail, with information boards and an accompanying brochure, runs through the Buchberger Leite between Freyung and Ringelai. Historic timber-floating walls, tunnels carved into the rock, and above-ground canals bear witness to centuries of human activity there. The natural landscape and traces of human labor thus shape two distinct aspects of this regional landscape.

Culture and Other Nature Topics in Freyung-Grafenau

In Freyung stands the Schramlhaus, built around 1700. It is now the town’s oldest farmstead and, in its original condition, one of the oldest in the district of Freyung-Grafenau. The Wolfsteiner local history museum is housed there. More than a hundred original, well-preserved examples of reverse glass painting, a form of sacred folk art, give the collection its own cultural history focus.

Near Neuschönau, the treetop walk is part of the Lusen National Park Center. The wildlife enclosure there offers information about the national park and its native wildlife. Its circular paths are suitable for small children who are not yet able to walk long distances. This regional area therefore offers a different kind of nature experience from the hiking routes described near Zenting.

The Gabreta Archaeological Adventure Park displays buildings reconstructed from original Celtic structures and serving as symbolic representations of Celtic artifacts found on the hill of Paul Freund. Bread baking is one of the hands-on activities for visitors; expert-guided tours about Celtic life can also be booked. The visitor program may change, so it is worth checking the latest information and the availability of a guided tour before planning your visit.
