Freyung offers a range of options for a stay: town history, regional art and traditions, as well as skiing and cross-country skiing. Attractions include museums, a castle, a historic farmstead, a glassblowing workshop and a park. When looking for a hotel in Freyung, it helps to first consider your travel interests: Are you mainly interested in historic sites, recurring events or winter sports?

History, art and attractions

The Schramlhaus was built around 1700 and is the oldest farmhouse in Freyung. More than a hundred original reverse glass paintings can be seen there; the Wolfstein Local History Museum is also housed in the Schramlhaus. Wolfstein Castle was built around 1200 by Bishop Wolfger von Erla of Passau. The gallery at Europahaus Freyung offers another connection to the arts: numerous artists from the Bavarian Forest–Bohemian Forest region regularly exhibit art and culture there. The architectural history and collection at the Schramlhaus thus provide cultural points of interest alongside the regularly changing exhibitions at the gallery and the history of the castle.

Traditions and recurring festivals

Freyung’s Bürgerfest has been celebrated annually since 1979. Every year, shortly before St Martin’s Day, the “In-der-Freyung” Historical Society organizes the traditional Wolfaustreiben on Freyung’s town square. Raising the maypole is also an annual tradition: the maypoles are felled, festively decorated and raised again by the young men and men of Freyung using wooden poles and ropes. The time of year for the Wolfaustreiben is specified more precisely; the Bürgerfest and maypole raising are described as recurring annual traditions.

Themed hiking trails

The eight-kilometre themed trail “People and Nature in the Buchberger Leite” runs between Freyung and Ringelai. Along the route, signs and numbered posts provide information about the stream and river system, the power of water, timber rafting and the geological history of the area, including the Pfahl rock formations. The trail therefore covers both natural features and the history of timber rafting.

The Kreuzberg Chapel Trail – Path of Reflection was created around Kreuzberg, a district of Freyung, and complements the revived St Anna pilgrimage. There are ten information boards and four chapels along the trail; the oldest chapel was built in 1509. The themes are clearly distinct: water, timber rafting and geological history are the focus in the Buchberger Leite, while the Kreuzberg Chapel Trail focuses on chapels and pilgrimage.

Winter sports in Freyung

The Freyung-Geyersberg ski and snowboard beginners’ centre has a 540-metre double drag lift. In Solla, there is an easy ski slope suitable for beginners and more experienced skiers; opening times depend on there being sufficient snow. The Freyung-Kreuzberg cross-country skiing centre has 30 kilometres of classic trails, plus a four-kilometre skating trail. For cross-country skiing, you can choose between classic trails and skating; the distances given are clearly distinguished. Trail conditions are seasonal. Check current conditions when planning your trip.
