Two distinct themes are at the heart of travel planning in Hohenau: reverse glass painting and hiking. This traditional craft is represented in Schönbrunn am Lusen; the Hohenau–Schönbrunn am Lusen cultural trail offers two circular routes. This lets you consider cultural interests and the planned length of a hiking day as separate priorities.

Reverse Glass Painting in Schönbrunn am Lusen

The Hinterglaseum in Schönbrunn am Lusen displays reverse glass paintings made about 200 years ago by the Raimundsreut panel painters. The museum also offers workshops and courses in its education room. The exhibition and courses provide two different ways to explore the same subject: you can view the historic paintings or learn about reverse glass painting in a course.

Hiking on Two Circular Routes

The Hohenau–Schönbrunn am Lusen cultural trail consists of two circular routes of different lengths, mostly along well-maintained paths. The Hohenau loop is about 8.5 km long and passes through the Hohenau hedgerow landscape and by moorland. The Schönbrunn loop, about 24 km long, is a full-day hike through meadows and stream valleys; it crosses woods on the edge of Bavarian Forest National Park. The loops therefore differ both in length and in their described timeframe and landscape.

Activities for visitors in the municipality include hiking, horse riding, cycling and e-biking. The two circular routes offer specific hiking options; other types of activity are also available as separate interests to consider when planning a trip.

Another landscape in the wider destination of Freyung-Grafenau is the Buchberger Leite wild-stream gorge. Steep rocky outcrops force the Wolfsteiner Ohe, with its boulders and cascades, into a deeply incised channel. Remnants of primeval forest have been preserved in the gorge’s moss- and fern-rich woods. An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail, with information boards and an accompanying brochure, runs through the Buchberger Leite between Freyung and Ringelai. Historic timber-floating walls, tunnels hewn into the rock and above-ground canals bear witness to centuries of human activity there.

The Schramlhaus is also located in Freyung, in the wider destination of Freyung-Grafenau. Built around 1700, the house is now the oldest rural homestead in Freyung and, in its original condition, is among the oldest in the district of Freyung-Grafenau. It houses more than a hundred original, well-preserved examples of reverse glass painting, classified as sacred folk art. The Wolfstein Local History Museum is also housed there.
