Accommodation in Thurmansbang
Thurmansbang offers several distinct reasons to visit, which you can consider when choosing your stay: a hiking route with a clearly described itinerary, ten recommended terrain health trails with different levels of difficulty, fishing opportunities at three bodies of water, and a medieval structure near Solla. The options therefore range from exercise and relaxation to cultural history. When planning, it helps to distinguish between a route with a specified course, trails categorized by level of difficulty, and activities tied to a particular location.
Hiking: route and levels of difficulty
The “Diebstein” hiking trail (No. 67) starts at the Thurmansbang Tourist Information Office. It runs along Puchberger Straße, through Finkenthal and past the Buchwiesweiher pond below Diebstein, then continues towards Bründl Chapel and back to Thurmansbang. The trail is about 4.5 kilometres long. Its approximate length and named stops give you two specific points of reference for the tour.
The municipality also offers a choice of ten recommended terrain health trails with varying levels of difficulty. The scale runs from 1, the easiest trail, to 10, the most demanding. This is a different way to find your bearings than on the Diebstein route: with the terrain health trails, you can take the level of difficulty into account, while the length and course are the main considerations for trail No. 67. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
Spa garden and fishing
The spa garden, with its climate pavilion, is next to the church in Thurmansbang. The pavilion provides a sheltered place for fresh-air reclining therapy, protected from wind and rain; the sunbathing lawn is intended for controlled sunbathing (heliotherapy). This means reclining in the sheltered pavilion and sunbathing on the lawn are described as different ways to use the garden.
Fishing is possible at Buchwiesweiher, Ebenreuther See and Dreiburgensee. If you plan this activity, check locally what permits are required and what conditions apply.
Scharten Chapel near Solla
Scharten Chapel near Solla was the most historically significant structure in the former municipality of Solla. A fortified complex once stood on this site: the castle of the Edle von Scharten. Scharten Chapel is believed to have been its castle chapel. The medieval structure is designed in the style of country churches. The site therefore combines an architectural classification with the traditional interpretation of the chapel as a castle chapel, though this is not presented as certain.
Nature and cultural heritage in Freyung-Grafenau
The wider Freyung-Grafenau destination adds distinct natural and cultural sites to the local attractions. The Bavarian Forest National Park extends into the Freyung-Grafenau district and opened on 7 October 1970 as Germany’s first national park. The 2024 zoning map designates 75.37 percent of its area as natural zones. The Buchberger Leite offers a different landscape: steep rock ridges confine the boulder-strewn, cascade-filled Wolfsteiner Ohe to a deep gorge; remnants of primeval forest have been preserved in the moss- and fern-rich ravine woodlands.
An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail with information boards and an accompanying brochure runs through the Buchberger Leite between Freyung and Ringelai. Historic timber-floating walls, tunnels hewn into the rock and above-ground canals bear witness to centuries of human activity there. The gorge thus combines a striking landform with visible traces of its use; the themed trail offers another, longer walking option in the wider destination.
The Schramlhaus in Freyung is another regional cultural attraction. Built around 1700, it is now the oldest farmhouse in Freyung and, in terms of its original state, one of the oldest in the Freyung-Grafenau district. The house contains more than one hundred original examples of religious folk art in the form of reverse-glass paintings. It also houses the Wolfstein Local History Museum.
