Sankt Englmar offers a variety of reasons to stay: walks above the treetops, more than 125 kilometres of marked hiking trails, hands-on natural science experiences and a local tradition on Whit Monday. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether views and outdoor activities, a seasonal offering, winter sledging or a particular date should be the focus of your trip.

Waldwipfelweg, Views and Getting Your Bearings

At the Waldwipfelweg in Sankt Englmar, you can walk above the treetops. From the path, the view extends south across the ridges of the Bavarian Forest, the Danube Valley and the Gäuboden plains as far as the Alps. The nature trail runs for two kilometres through woodland and open countryside.

The operator describes the Waldwipfelweg and the forest tower as accessible and easy to navigate with a pushchair, wheelchair or rollator. Check the operator’s current access information before your visit. The Waldwipfelweg is served hourly by express bus route 58 from the railway stations in Viechtach and Bogen. Check the current timetable before travelling.

Hiking and Winter

Sankt Englmar has more than 125 kilometres of well-marked hiking trails. Various guided hikes are offered from May to October; specific dates and schedules may vary. If you are planning a guided hike, check the dates for your travel period.

For a winter experience, the spa park has a 150-metre-long sledging slope with a lift, snowmaking and floodlighting. The slope is a winter facility; its operation depends on seasonal conditions. Before your trip, check whether the sledging slope will be open on your planned date.

Natural Science and Tradition

At the Bayerwald Xperium, visitors can discover natural phenomena using all their senses and understand natural science through hands-on experimentation. There are more than 100 interactive experiment stations. The focus here is on hands-on discovery, while the Waldwipfelweg offers a different experience, with a path above the treetops and views across the landscape.

History and local customs also give your stay a distinct point of reference. Leonhardi Chapel was consecrated in 1480. The Englmari-Suchen, held every year on Whit Monday, is a religious pageant commemorating the death and discovery of the hermit and later patron of the town, Blessed Engelmar. A historic procession with many riders heads to Chapel Hill, where a wooden figure of the Blessed Engelmar is symbolically recovered.

Plan Around Seasonal Offerings

The timing varies: guided hikes are offered from May to October, the Englmari-Suchen takes place on Whit Monday, and operation of the sledging slope depends on the season. If one of these experiences is a deciding factor for your trip, plan around the relevant dates and check the specific hiking dates and the sledging slope’s current operating conditions.
