Konzell – wooded hills, cycling and hiking trails
Accommodation in Konzell
Konzell lies among wooded hills on both sides of the Menach Valley, between Straubing and Cham, at an elevation of 500 to 900 m above sea level. This gives you three clear themes to consider when planning your trip: cycling, a circular hike on Gallner Mountain, and the annual Gallnerberg Festival.
Cycling and Pilgrimage
The Danube-Regen Cycle Route runs right by Konzell; the village is an ideal starting point for cycling tours through unspoiled countryside. The Way of St. James passes through the municipality and offers a different focus for your route. This means cycling and a pilgrimage route are distinct options for your plans: you can choose Konzell as a starting point for cycling tours or explore the route of the Way of St. James through the municipality.
The Loop over Gallner Mountain
The circular hiking trail from Denkzell over Gallner Mountain in the municipality of Konzell starts at the fire station in Denkzell, where there is a small parking area. Along the way, it passes a small pond and a wildlife enclosure, then crosses lush green meadows. There are lovely views from Hungerberg before the route continues toward Gallner. This gives you two distinct options for planning your outings: a cycling route or a circular hike with a specific starting point in Denkzell that leads over Gallner Mountain.
Guided Tours and the Gallnerberg Festival
Guided tours in Konzell, Gossersdorf and Denkzell are available on request by prior telephone arrangement. You can therefore arrange this activity by phone. The traditional Gallnerberg Festival is held every year on Whit Monday at the Gallner chapel. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the exact date before travelling; this recurring tradition takes place on Whit Monday.
More to Explore in the Wider Straubing-Bogen Destination
In the wider Straubing-Bogen destination, Bogenberg offers a distinct cultural focus. It is one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimage sites that is still active today; the Holzkirchen Candle Pilgrimage takes place every year at Pentecost at the pilgrimage church. The Bogenberg District Museum explores the history of Bavaria’s lozenges: from the Counts of Windberg-Bogen, through their use by the Wittelsbachs and in the Bavarian coat of arms, to their role as a symbol of Bavaria. The museum offers individually tailored guided tours about Bogenberg for groups of ten or more and school classes. These can also be booked outside opening hours by prior telephone or written arrangement.
Nature trails are also part of the wider Straubing-Bogen destination. The Kobelberg Nature Experience Trail in Wiesenfelden is about 4.5 km long, has nine stations, is suitable for strollers and is cleared in winter. Another option is the circular trail around Beckenweiher in Wiesenfelden: it is 2.3 km long, accessible, and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Five information points with benches and information boards share interesting facts about the wildlife and plant life, protected status and history of Beckenweiher; the loop also includes a 110 m nature observation boardwalk.
