Steinach: Geology, Chapels and Trails
Accommodation in Steinach
Steinach can be explored through several local themes: the geological formation of Helmberg and Buchberg near Münster, chapels, and a circular hiking trail with information about nature and local features.
Understanding the landscape near Münster through geology
Helmberg and Buchberg near Münster lie on the southern slope of the Bavarian Forest. They are not mountains in their own right, but limestone slabs: their rock layers from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods lie on the crystalline granite and gneiss of the basement. The landscape here is therefore described not only by its forms, but also by its geological structure. For orientation, it helps to distinguish between the two terrain features and their shared geological classification.
Chapels and art in Münster
The listed Buchberg Chapel, a field chapel dating from the 18th century, stands on the northern slope of Buchberg near Münster. The Tiburtius cycle adds a cultural perspective on Münster: it consists of four large ceiling paintings, two wall paintings and the altarpiece of the high altar. The details of the cycle therefore encompass different parts of the decoration, not just the ceiling paintings.
In the wider area around the destination, the parish community of Münster regularly visits Aumer Chapel during rogation processions and holds May devotions there. These recurring occasions offer insight into the community’s religious practices. They are distinct from Buchberg Chapel as a listed field chapel and its historical significance.
Circular trail connecting nature and local history
The Münster History and Nature Trail is a circular hiking route around Münster in the municipality of Steinach and the surrounding hills. Twelve information boards tell hikers about local nature and features. Those looking for a trail with themed information will find a different kind of orientation here than at the chapels: the focus is on the landscape and the explanations provided along the circular route.
More destinations in the wider Straubing-Bogen destination
The wider Straubing-Bogen destination includes other distinct cultural and nature attractions. On Bogenberg, the pilgrimage site is one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimage sites still active today. The annual Holzkirchen Candle Pilgrimage takes place at the pilgrimage church there at Pentecost.
The Bogenberg District Museum explores the history of the Bavarian lozenges: from the Counts of Windberg-Bogen, through their use by the Wittelsbachs and in the Bavarian coat of arms, to their status as a symbol of Bavaria. The museum also presents Bogenberg as Lower Bavaria’s Holy Mountain and as the site of one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimages. The museum offers individually tailored guided tours about Bogenberg for groups of ten or more and school classes. Tours can also be booked outside opening hours with advance notice by phone or in writing.
The circular trail around Beckenweiher in Wiesenfelden offers a different experience: it is 2.3 kilometres long, accessible, and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Five information points with benches and information boards cover the wildlife and plant life, the pond’s protected status and its history. There is also a 110-metre-long nature observation boardwalk. The route’s length, accessibility and information offerings are concrete features of this regional trail.
At WaldWipfelWeg in Maibrunn near Sankt Englmar, an accessible walking path runs above the treetops at a height of up to 30 metres. The Nature Experience Trail features hands-on activity stations and climbing opportunities, as well as animals such as alpacas, llamas, sheep and kangaroos.
