Schwarzach: Local History and Hiking Trails on the Grandsberg
Accommodation in Schwarzach
Schwarzach offers two themes to consider when planning a trip: historic architectural traces at the market square and activities in the surrounding area of the Grandsberg. If you’re planning a stay focused on the town, you can explore its local history; for outdoor activity, there are marked hiking trails and a seasonal cross-country skiing area nearby. The wider Straubing-Bogen destination also offers its own cultural and scenic attractions.
Local History at the Market Square
Parts of the former castle are incorporated into today’s market square. Remains of the former Electoral brewery, built in 1687, are still present. These two historic landmarks represent different architectural traces: remnants of the castle are integrated into the market square, while remains of the brewery have been preserved.
Exploring the Grandsberg Area
There are 70 km of marked hiking trails in the area around the Grandsberg near Schwarzach. The Schwarzach–Grandsberg cross-country skiing area has 40 km of groomed trails; snow conditions vary. This gives you two different activities to choose from: hiking on marked trails or cross-country skiing on groomed trails. If you’re planning a winter outing, check the snow conditions before setting off.
More Destinations in the Wider Straubing-Bogen Area
The wider Straubing-Bogen destination is shaped by the Bavarian Forest, the fertile Gäuboden plain, and the Danube. At Bogenberg, the Bogenberg District Museum explores the history of the Bavarian lozenges—from the Counts of Windberg-Bogen and their use by the Wittelsbachs to their appearance in the Bavarian state coat of arms and their role as a symbol of Bavaria. The museum also presents Bogenberg as Lower Bavaria’s Holy Mountain and as the site of one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimage traditions. Individually designed guided tours are available for groups of 10 or more and school classes; with advance notice by phone or in writing, tours can also be booked outside opening hours. Bogenberg is one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimage sites that is still active today. The Holzkirchen candle pilgrimage takes place at the pilgrimage church every year at Pentecost.
Windberg offers another perspective on the cultural heritage of the wider Straubing-Bogen area: its medieval monastery complex is largely preserved and includes a basilica, prelate’s residence, courthouse, and craftsman’s house. The medieval village lies on a scenic hill at an elevation of 420 m and offers panoramic views of the mountains of the Bavarian Forest, the Bogenbach Valley, and the Danube plain.
In Wiesenfelden, the circular trail around Beckenweiher offers another nature-focused attraction in the wider Straubing-Bogen area. The accessible trail is 2.3 km long and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Five information points with benches and information boards cover the local flora and fauna, the pond’s protected status, and its history; there is also a 110 m nature observation boardwalk.
Bogen has three day tours for families with children: the “Culture Tour,” the “Beer Garden Tour,” and the “Left and Right of the Danube” tour. The European VIA NOVA pilgrimage route is signposted as a hiking trail along a total length of around 300 km and passes through Bogen. This means the wider Straubing-Bogen area offers both cycling day tours and a longer signposted hiking route.
