Au lies in the Hexental between Schönberg and Schauinsland, just outside Freiburg. Despite its proximity, the village has preserved its natural character. The surrounding hills, forest and farms shape the landscape around Au. You can reach the municipality by car, public transport or bicycle.

Hiking and trails around Au

One specific destination is the Hexental nature trail. The route is about ten kilometres long and follows a historic path from Au to Bollschweil. In the Au section, information boards explain forest ecosystems, animals, tree species and forestry. Twelve life-size carved forest animals are also placed along the route.

If you want to plan a named route with a destination, the nature trail connects Au with Bollschweil. Another option is to follow the gentle climbs from Au to the surrounding hills: from there, views extend over the Freiburg basin, the Kaiserstuhl and the Schauinsland massif. Forest and walks are also part of the nature experience: 40 percent of the municipality’s area is forested, and the forest invites you to enjoy leisurely walks.

Agriculture and the Auer Market

Au still has numerous farms, most of them dairy farms. This rural character adds another aspect to the village’s trails and forest areas.

The Auer Market brings together a range of food offerings, including seasonal vegetables, artisan meat products, bread and pastries, homemade Mediterranean specialities, and wines from local producers. The market also includes wine service and serves as a local meeting place. The selection may vary depending on the season and vendors; market arrangements may also change. If particular products or wine service are important for your visit, check the latest market information in advance.

Historical traces

The earliest historical references date back to the 9th century: Au was first mentioned together with a church in 861, and a vineyard in Au was mentioned in 868. A chapel was built in 1668 and consecrated by the Bishop of Constance in 1669. A battle also took place in Au on 3 August 1644. These dates offer different glimpses into the village’s history, from its early ecclesiastical and viticultural connections to later events.
