Discover Ehrenkirchen
Accommodation in Ehrenkirchen
Ehrenkirchen lies around 13 kilometres south of Freiburg im Breisgau, on the edge of the Markgräflerland and in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. The municipality is shaped by a wooded natural landscape between the Markgräflerland and Breisgau. When looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around the topics that interest you: hiking, cycling, winegrowing or architectural history.
Hiking trails and protected landscapes
Ten hiking trails are signposted in Ehrenkirchen. The regional routes Bettlerpfad and Markgräfler Wiiwegli also pass through the town. The Stone Age Trail runs through the Ölberg Ehrenstetten Nature Reserve and the Schönberg Special Area of Conservation, with its Black Forest slopes. The area around Ehrenstetter Ölberg has been designated a nature reserve since 1996 and covers around 24 hectares.
The Mining Trail leads to traces of medieval silver mining in the Ehrenstetter Grund: these include a large wheel chamber, a dam and three open adits. The route to the Ehrenstetter Grund is about 3.2 kilometres on foot or by bike, followed by a loop of approximately 2 kilometres. The 6.5-kilometre Archaeology Trail connects a Celtic hilltop settlement with Alemannic graves. The routes focus on different aspects of history: silver mining on the Mining Trail and early settlement on the Archaeology Trail.
The four signposted mountain bike tours are circular routes, each starting and ending at the town hall.
Kirchhofen, Ehrenstetten and architectural history
The elevated pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary in Kirchhofen has a Baroque character and a 600-year history. The present-day church was built as a Gothic stone structure in 1409 and extended in the Baroque style from 1740 onwards. Also in Kirchhofen is the former moated castle, dating from the 13th century. The two dates put the architectural history in chronological order: the Gothic stone structure of 1409 was followed more than three centuries later by the Baroque extension, which began in 1740.
A walk across the vine-covered Kirchberg to Bellenhöhe offers views of the Rhine plain, the Kaiserstuhl, Breisach and the Vosges in Alsace. In Ehrenstetten, St. George’s Church stands opposite Wentzingerplatz. Christian Wentzinger was also born in Ehrenstetten.
Vineyards and day trips
Ehrenstetter Ölberg is one of the few fully south-facing vineyard sites in the Markgräflerland wine-growing region. The wines produced there are considered high quality. Winegrowing and landscape are therefore among the features that help shape the character of the municipality, alongside its hiking and cycling trails.
Day trips from Ehrenkirchen could include Strasbourg, Colmar and Mulhouse in Alsace, as well as Basel in Switzerland. In the wider Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald travel region, many places in the district can be reached by train. With the free KONUS guest card, you can travel free of charge on local trains and buses throughout the Black Forest.
