Löffingen offers several distinct highlights to consider when planning a stay: a historic town center, church art and local traditions, the Wutach Gorge, and trails for hiking and winter sports. The following pointers can help you weigh up which highlights to focus on during your stay.

Historic town center, churches and stories

Löffingen’s historic town center forms an irregular oval. Its only main axis is a former long-distance trade route, which widens in the center into a market square with the town hall in the middle. Three gates have been preserved; they remained closed until the 19th century. This layout and the gates give the town center its own distinctive historical character.

The churches also offer different insights. The present-day Witterschnee pilgrimage church was built from 1894 to 1897 in the Neo-Romanesque style. In St. Michael’s town church, the St. Märgen Rococo sculptor Mathias Faller designed the high altar that stands there today; the side altars and their figures are also his work. If you are interested in art history, you can discover two different architectural and artistic influences in Löffingen here.

The Witterschneekreuz is associated with the development of a pilgrimage site. According to tradition, a man heard a bell from Löffingen there. Woodcutters passing by took him to the town, after which he fulfilled his vow. Over the years, more and more pilgrims came there. A tour of the local history museum in the town of Löffingen also reveals little stories: it displays numerous treasures, each with its own story to tell.

Wutach Gorge and hiking routes

The Wutach Gorge is considered a unique nature reserve and a strictly protected wild river valley. Important for planning your route: the gorge cannot be crossed by vehicle and must be hiked on foot. One recommended itinerary includes a hiking bus connection from Löffingen station. It goes to Göschweiler and the Schattenmühle; from there, the route offers an approximately 9.5-kilometer hike through the Wutach Gorge to Bachheim. Check the hiking bus timetable before making your plans so you can take the connection into account.

For a shorter outing, there is another option: the digital Löffingen town rally is rated easy, covers 3.5 kilometers and takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. It is designed for families with children aged six and over and starts at the public library at Rathausplatz 14. This lets you factor in the approximate duration and distance when planning your day.

At the medicinal herb educational trail, you can visit the “Biblical Herb Garden,” featuring medicinal plants. It is located behind the playground in the direction of the festival hall. The garden offers its own theme alongside hikes through the gorge and historic stops in the town center.

Winter activities and Dittishausen

The Löffingen cross-country ski trail is 20 kilometers long in total; less experienced skiers can use sections of 5 and 10 kilometers. Dittishausen, a district of Löffingen, is the only district in the town with a ski lift for children, beginners and adults. The information distinguishes between two aspects of planning: for the trail, the total distance and shorter sections are key, while the listed user groups are useful points of reference for the ski lift.

Dittishausen also has attractions outside the winter season. The lovingly renovated Weiler Chapel is one of the oldest buildings in the village and invites visitors to linger. The historic pumping station on the Gauchach is considered well worth a visit. The local hiking trails offer open views of the Feldberg and the Alps. These destinations and views are in the district of Dittishausen and complement the impressions of Löffingen’s town center with a different focus.

Information for planning your trip

The Löffingen information point offers brochures and flyers with tips on attractions, as well as hiking and cycling tours. A digital terminal with an app complements the range of information. If you have specific questions, you can get direct support there via video call on hiking tours, winter sports and family holidays. So if you would like to plan your days in Löffingen around particular themes, you can find both printed suggestions and help with these topics there.
