Saint-Cyr-Sur-Mer: Beaches, Coastal Paths and Culture
Accommodation in Saint-Cyr-Sur-Mer
Saint-Cyr-Sur-Mer offers several focal points for planning a trip: the sandy coastline of Les Lecques, the pebble beach of Port d’Alon, paths linked to winegrowing and history, and art and archaeology. Which of these aspects interests you most can shape the character of your stay.
Beaches and Coastal Landscape
Plage des Lecques is a large, family-friendly beach with fine sand. The landscaped Promenade Rose runs along its nearly two-kilometre stretch of sand. The Calanque de Port d’Alon offers a different coastal setting: it is a pebble beach away from built-up areas. The two beach descriptions therefore differ mainly in whether the shore is sandy or pebbly, and in its location relative to built-up areas. The calanque is also a starting point for the coastal hiking trail. Access arrangements may change, so check the current access information before visiting.
Paths and Historic Traces
The Sentier des Vignes is a two-kilometre circular trail from La Madrague to Port d’Alon. Another way to explore the coast on foot is the Sentier patrimonial de la pointe Grenier. It starts at the far end of Port de la Madrague. After Reinette Beach, the route passes a rare petrifying spring that forms travertine. The path also leads to the restored remains of a military battery. The complex includes a chapel, a powder magazine, barracks and a watchtower.
The two paths have different focal points: the Sentier des Vignes is described as a circular route, with its two-kilometre length and endpoints specified. The Sentier patrimonial connects the coastal route with a geological feature and traces of the military battery. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Art, Archaeology and Local History
In the town centre, on Place Portalis, stands “Miss Liberty”: an original model of the Statue of Liberty signed by Auguste Frédéric Bartholdi. The Centre d’Art Sébastien offers a different cultural focus. The former caper factory has been devoted to contemporary art since 1993. Its temporary exhibitions focus on contemporary work and Provençal artists.
The Musée Gallo-Romain de Tauroentum was built in a pine grove overlooking the sea, on the remains of a Roman villa. Its interpretation focuses on the daily lives of the residents of a villa maritima dating from the 1st century AD. This site therefore centres on archaeological remains and life in the Roman villa, while the Centre d’Art Sébastien presents contemporary art. Museum visiting arrangements may vary; check current options before visiting.
The Chapelle des Lecques is another place with local historical significance. It is a small building in the Les Lecques district, close to the sea, and bears witness to the history of the area. Together with the Roman remains and the military battery, it offers another perspective on the different historical connections in Saint-Cyr-Sur-Mer.
Wine Visits and Tastings
At Domaine du Cagueloup, you can taste AOP Bandol wines, AOP CĂ´tes de Provence wines and IGP wines from Mont Caume. Groups can visit the wine cellar and vineyards by prior arrangement, followed by a tasting on the terrace. Advance booking is required for this group visit and should be taken into account when planning.
Domaine de l’Estagnol offers tours and tastings of Bandol wines and French wines. The two wine estates therefore have different focal points: Cagueloup lists several appellations and describes a group visit followed by a tasting, while Estagnol offers tours and tastings of Bandol and French wines. If a visit is important to your travel plans, check the current options in advance.
