Cap Bénat combines a varied coastal landscape with remarkable architecture and water sports. The protected coastal area covers 75.44 hectares and is open to the public. Before booking, you can consider which aspect you would like to shape your stay.

Coast, Hills and Nature

The landscape at Cap Bénat includes vineyards, hills covered with cork oaks, and coastal forests of Aleppo pines and umbrella pines. Along the shore, sandy beaches alternate with rocky headlands and steep cliffs. This brings together wooded heights, forested coastlines, and open stretches of rock and beach; the landscape is not limited to a single type of coastline.

Wild boar, red foxes, European badgers, weasels, stone martens and Hermann’s tortoises also frequent the wooded hills. The natural character of Cap Bénat encompasses its plants and landforms as well as the wildlife of its hills.

Architecture at Cap Bénat

The Village des Fourches in the Domaine du Gaou Bénat has been awarded the “Architecture contemporaine remarquable” label by the French Ministry of Culture. The construction of the 240 holiday homes was entrusted to André Lefèvre-Devaux and Jean Aubert; the stated construction years are 1961 and 1978.

The houses follow the contours of the land. Terraces and gardens are landscaped with native plants, while walls made from local natural stone help integrate the buildings visually into their natural surroundings. Here, the terrain is part of the architectural design, along with the planting and materials.

The Villa l'Esquillette in the Domaine du Cap Bénat has a different spatial layout. Designed by Philip Johnson in 1964, it has been awarded the “patrimoine XXe” label. Five freestanding pavilions are arranged around a patio and connected by open-air walkways. Unlike the Village des Fourches, whose houses follow the contours of the land, the focus here is on grouping the buildings around the patio. The two ensembles thus represent different architectural approaches: integration with the terrain and vegetation on the one hand, and a pavilion layout on the other.

The section connecting the Favière–Cap Blanc stretch of the coastal path with the Cabasson–Pellegrin stretch is currently closed to the public for safety reasons under a municipal safety order. Its status may change after future works.

The Sémaphore de Bénat is located above Cap Bénat and offers an exceptional view of the islands of Port-Cros and Le Levant. Public access arrangements may vary, so check the current options before visiting.

Walkways have been installed at Gaou-Bénat to reduce erosion along the coastal paths. If you are planning a walk there, it is advisable to check the condition of the paths in advance.

For water sports, the Yacht Club du Gaou Bénat rents out kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, catamarans and dinghies, and also offers private lessons. The offer is seasonal and availability may vary. Before making plans, check whether your preferred rental option or private lesson is available on your intended date.

For practical planning, two different questions are therefore relevant: for a walk, the condition of the paths is the main consideration; for a water-sports activity, it is the seasonal availability of the option you choose.
