La Garde-Freinet lies in the heart of the Massif des Maures, surrounded by striking, well-preserved natural landscapes. To plan your visit, you can start by deciding whether you want to focus on history, a particular route or the landscape.
Cultural Sites and History
Fort Freinet was a fortified medieval settlement covering an area of 4,000 m² and was inhabited from the late 12th to the 16th century. This remarkable protected natural site stands on a hill 450 metres high and offers exceptional panoramic views. The visit includes around 45 minutes of walking along a steep path. Be sure to factor this walk into your visit.
The Conservatoire du Patrimoine du Freinet features exhibitions on chestnut growing, silkworm farming and cork harvesting. A permanent exhibition is also devoted to the archaeological site of Fort Freinet. The exhibits bring together themes from regional agriculture and crafts with the history of the fortified settlement.
The Chapelle Saint-Jean, Saint-Antoine et Saint-Crépin was founded in 1622 and completed in early 1628. The commune bought back the Chapelle Saint-Jean in 2002 to use it as a cultural venue open to the public. It serves as an exhibition space for the commune; opening arrangements may vary. Check them before your visit.
The Musée d'Histoire in La Garde-Freinet holds in its collection a votive painting dating from the second or third quarter of the 18th century. It comes from the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Miremer and was listed as a protected historic monument on 24 June 2003. The small cave of La Baume des Maures lies in the Massif des Maures, where there are few caves; burial remains from the later prehistoric period have been found there. It is accessible on foot only. Trail conditions may change, so check them in advance.
