Ollioules between heritage and nature
Accommodation in Ollioules
When looking for a hotel in Ollioules, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: historic buildings, museums and crafts offer a different perspective from hiking, wildlife watching or a walk along the Canal des Arrosants. The places and activities give you different starting points for planning your trip.
Historic buildings and museums
The Église Saint-Laurent has been listed as a historic monument since 1982. Another way to explore the town’s architectural history is the Maison du Patrimoine. It is located in an exceptional private mansion dating from the 17th century at 20 Rue Gambetta, and presents the history of the heritage of the Toulon Provence Méditerranée area across seven rooms. The exceptional quality of the decorations led to the building being listed as a historic monument. Here, the house’s design and the presentation of regional heritage history come together.
At the Musée Bottin-Layet, a section of the medieval city wall is part of the museum’s architectural history: the building was constructed around this section of wall, which was discovered in situ during renovation work. The Musée de l’Ecole Publique focuses on a different subject. It is housed in the former Sainte-Geneviève school and recreates a classroom as well as an earlier Salle d’asile, a forerunner of the kindergarten. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between the city wall, school history and the Maison du Patrimoine’s broader presentation of heritage.
The history of flower growing is also among the museum’s subjects. The Musée de la Fleur d’Ollioules, together with the Jardin des Heures, is located in the town center on the Promenade de la Reppe. Its presentation of flower growing in Ollioules covers the period from the mid-19th century to the present day. The museum thus combines a specific location in the center with a long span of local agricultural history.
Crafts and cultural program
In Ollioules, you can shift your focus from historic collections to practical crafts. Les Ateliers d’Ollioules brings together more than 40 workshops run by craftspeople and creative artists. In addition, more than 15 workshops in Ollioules offer hands-on introductions to specialist craft skills. The participating workshops may change. Mano X Alto has a 44 m² ceramics workshop in the former Chapel of the Pénitents, which dates from 1667. It also has a creative space open to everyone and a program of public events.
Châteauvallon-Scène Nationale offers a performing arts program spanning several disciplines: throughout the year, its program includes dance, theater, music and cinema. The institution received the “Scène Nationale” designation in 2015; specific events change. Ollioules’ astronomy club also offers events throughout the year to help visitors discover planets and stars. These activities complement the heritage experience with contemporary culture and learning.
Another local tradition is the Jonquier nougat factory, where five generations have succeeded one another since 1885. Factory visits are possible during the production months. Since visiting times depend on production, it is advisable to confirm the dates before your trip.
Waterways, views and nature
The Canal des Arrosants has shaped the history of agriculture and horticulture in Ollioules since the 15th century. It served both as a source of hydraulic power for mills and to irrigate agricultural crops. A walk along the canal combined with a visit to the Moulin de Palisson connects this history of water management with a walking route. This offers a different focus from the climb up the hill to Ollioules’ medieval fortress, which affords an impressive view.
If you prefer wildlife watching and hiking, the Ollioules municipal forest is another point of interest. It is designated as a Natura 2000 site and is home to plant and animal species typical of Mediterranean forests. The forest offers opportunities for hiking and wildlife watching; seasonal access restrictions may apply. With its hiking and wildlife watching, the municipal forest offers a distinct focus alongside Ollioules’ cultural attractions.
Planning dates and travel
The local events calendar includes the recurring Fête de l’Olivier. Its 34th edition took place in 2025. For future trips, check the dates for the relevant edition. A Provençal market is also held in Ollioules.
Bus services between Toulon and Ollioules are operated by Réseau Mistral on routes 12 and 11B. As routes may change, check the latest information before travelling. You can plan your stay around your interests: listed buildings and museums, crafts and cultural events, or paths along the canal and through the municipal forest.
