There are two distinct ways to approach a trip to Oslany: the Buchlov Nature Trail offers a clearly defined walking route, while the church, Marian column, and local history introduce historical themes in the town. The route’s length and approximate duration can be specified, and the landscape between the basin and mountain ranges gives the surrounding area its own geographical setting.

Hiking the Buchlov Nature Trail

The landscape protection authority lists the Buchlov Nature Trail as 5.3 km long, with an elevation difference of 400 m; it gives the duration as approximately 3 to 4 hours. The trail is classified as a linear walking route that can be completed independently, intended for summer use, and can be walked in either direction. The combination of route length, elevation difference, and estimated time gives you concrete points of reference for fitting the hike into your stay.

The route can start in Osľany, Bystričany, or Horná Ves. It follows the ridge through the Buchlov Nature Reserve to Žarnov. The nature trail is accessible via SAD in Osľany, Bystričany, or Horná Ves; check the timetable for your travel date. The three possible starting points and the named endpoint help you plan the hike without assuming that Oslany is the only starting point.

A Slovak double cross was erected on the summit of Žarnov in 2000. It is 6 m high and 4 m wide. The summit is also the destination of the nature trail: alongside the route’s length and estimated duration, there is a specifically named endpoint. If you are interested in the hike, you can consider it as a trip in its own right based on this information.

Landscape between basins and mountain ranges

Oslany lies at the transition between the Hornonitra Basin and the mountain regions of Vtáčnik, Tribeč, and Strážovské vrchy. Forests cover more than half of the cadastral area; their total area is 1,375 ha. Part of Oslany’s territory belongs to the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. This means that the protected-area designation does not cover the entire municipality.

The waterways also have different relationships to the town. The Nitra runs along the edge of the municipal territory from northeast to southwest. The SlanĂ˝ stream flows through Oslany and joins the Nitra in the western part of the territory. This distinction is important for getting your bearings: the Nitra follows the edge of the territory, while the SlanĂ˝ flows through the town.

Church and local history

The Church of St. Stephen the King (Kostol sv. Štefana kráľa) stands on Námestie slobody in Oslany. It was rebuilt from 1756 to 1768 and has a style resembling the Baroque. The Immaculata Marian column stands in front of the church. It dates from the second half of the 18th century and is listed in the Register of Cultural Monuments in Slovakia. The church and column provide two specific, historically dated points of reference for exploring the town.

The settlement pattern is also part of the town’s history. The original center of Oslany was architecturally a linear village situated along a stream. It developed into a small town with a market square. A brewery was built there in the 18th century. This development adds to the picture provided by the church: alongside the renovation of a religious building, you can also trace the evolution of the town center and its market square.

Highlights for your stay

When looking for hotels in Oslany, you can match your travel priorities to these distinctions. The nature trail offers a hike with a stated duration of approximately three to four hours; the church, Marian column, and development of the settlement offer a historical way to explore the town. Before booking, you can consider whether the hike or the town’s history is a greater part of the reason for your trip.
