There are three main themes to explore on a trip to Svinná: church art and local history, the two-day Fašiangy festival, or activities on the water. This can help you decide whether you are most interested in church art and local history, a traditional festive custom, or activities on the water.

Church and Older Art

The church in Svinná was built in the Art Nouveau style with Neo-Gothic elements. Bishop Dr. Karol Kmeťko consecrated it on November 11, 1923. Another historical detail is the Pietà statue at the side altar of the Holy Sepulchre: it dates from the mid-17th century and is protected by the Monuments Board. The statue’s age and the church’s consecration date thus provide two different points of reference for the history of the church.

A bell with a name and year of manufacture is also associated with the chapel in Malá Neporadzka. The bell in the little tower is called “sv. Mária” and was cast in 1919 at Pavel Ranko’s workshop in Trenčín. When looking at the area’s cultural history, you can therefore consider the church’s design and furnishings as well as the name and origin of this bell.

Fašiangy: Two Days of Festivities

The Fašiangy in Svinná last two days and bring together a range of events. On Saturday, a procession of carnival masks makes its way through the municipality. On the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the “pochovávanie basy” ceremony takes place. Local firefighters have been involved in organizing Fašiangy practically since their organization was founded in 1884.

The procession covers approximately 11 kilometers, equal to the total length of all the municipality’s roads. This figure gives the procession a tangible scale and is part of its distinctive local character. If the Fašiangy are the reason for your trip, check the dates of the upcoming festival in advance, as the festival days are essential for planning.

Distinguishing Historical Dates

The origins of Svinná are dated to the years 1171 to 1180. The existence of the municipality in 1208 is inferred indirectly: the name “Suina” appears in a boundary description of Dobrašov. The first direct written mention of Svinná dates from 1439, when it is referred to as “Possessio seu villa ZWYNNA.”

Stream, Reservoir and Getting There

Svinná lies on the upper reaches of the Svinnica stream. The Svinica Reservoir is nearby, where sport fishing and water sports are possible. The similar-sounding names therefore refer to different things: the stream is part of the description of Svinná’s location, while the reservoir is mentioned as a nearby place for activities on the water.

Svinná also has a railway station on the Trenčín–Chynorany line. For a specific train journey, check current train services and the timetable for your travel date. This means you can choose a destination based on a range of different features, including cultural history, water activities and a rail connection.
