Omšenie is a mountain municipality in the southwestern part of the Strážovské vrchy. The Teplička stream flows through the village. Above the municipality lies Omšenská Baba, a distinctive carbonate rock formation on the edge of the mountain range and part of a nature reserve. The landscape there includes rock, forest and wetland communities. Rare plants such as Pulsatilla subsalavica, Dianthus praecox subsp. praecox and Primula auricula grow in the rock habitats.

Hiking and Activities

You can plan hikes to two destinations with different starting points and durations. The blue-marked route to Baske starts right in Omšenie; the ascent takes two and a half to three hours. A hike to Omšenská Baba starts at the small parking area by the cemetery and takes about two and a half hours in total, including rest breaks. When comparing the times, note that the duration given for Baske is for the ascent, while the duration for the Baba hike is the total time, including breaks. Check the trail markers and local trail conditions before setting out.

Another trail, the Lesnícky náučný chodník, starts at the bridge by the Kamenický stream reservoir in the Baračka district. Keep in mind that local signs and conditions may change. Fishing is possible at the Omšenská priehrada, including for catfish, tench, carp and pike. If you would like to fish there, check the current local access rules in advance. A tourist hut is located below the summit of Baske. Whether you can access the hut depends on whether the hut warden is present.

The Žihľavník Riding Club in Omšenie offers carriage and sleigh rides, riding lessons in the indoor arena, western riding and accompanied horse leading. Check current booking arrangements with the club in advance. A winter hiking meet takes place on Baske every year; the riding club holds a Western Day once a year. Check the dates for the relevant year if either event fits your travel dates.

Churches, History and Tradition

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Omšenie dates from the first half of the 13th century. It is Romanesque, with a Romanesque tower, a rectangular floor plan and a polygonal apse. The church is listed under ÚZPF number 1291/1. Outside Omšenie, in the direction of Trenčianske Teplice, stands the Baroque Chapel of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1794. The chapel houses a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary.

Daniel Krman, a Slovak writer and cultural figure, was born in Omšenie on 28 August 1663. A memorial plaque in the village commemorates him. The Omšenský kroj is also part of local tradition: the folk costume is associated with the area's mountain farming and pastoral character and is still worn in Omšenie today.

At the end of the Kamenická Valley in Omšenie stands the Monument to American Airmen. It commemorates the shooting down of an American bomber in 1944, in which Roland W. Morin lost his life. The monument adds another place of remembrance of the municipality's history alongside its older churches and the Daniel Krman memorial plaque.
