In Gánovce, a Neanderthal find and travertine meet historic churches, mineral springs and a marked hiking route. If you are looking for a hotel in Gánovce, you can first consider whether cultural history, nature or a tour is particularly important for your trip.

Neanderthal Find and Travertine

The Hrádok travertine site in Gánovce yielded the endocranial cast of a Neanderthal woman who lived about 105,000 years ago. The site where the cast was found, in the Gánovce Neanderthal Geopark, is considered significant both in Europe and worldwide. The Podtatranské Museum in nearby Poprad presents the exhibition “Gánovce – Neanderthal and His Environment.” This brings two different places into the picture: Hrádok is in Gánovce, while the museum is in Poprad.

The open-air mini-museum of Slovak travertine is also part of the travertine theme. It was designed to collect and display travertine formations from different parts of Slovakia. This focus on the collection places the local travertine site in a broader Slovak context.

Churches and a Cultural Monument

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Gánovce is early Gothic and was built in the second half of the 13th century, around 1260. It features Gothic wall paintings from the mid-14th century and an incomplete late Gothic altar dating to around 1500. The dates span the church’s construction, the paintings and a later furnishing, bringing different periods of local history to life.

In Filice, construction of the Evangelical church began in 1873. It was completed five years later and consecrated on 29 September 1878. The consecration day fell on Michaelmas and the 16th Sunday after Trinity. In contrast to the medieval church in Gánovce, the focus here is on 19th-century construction history. The manor house in Gánovce is also part of the local cultural heritage: it was declared a cultural monument in 1963.

Mineral Springs and Protected Landscape

Healing springs in Gánovce were mentioned as early as 1549; a spa settlement gradually developed around them. The healing spring at AquaSpa Gánovce is described as a gypsum-rich, earthy, carbonated water, consisting mainly of bicarbonate, calcium and magnesium. Its temperature is 24.2 °C. In addition to the healing spring, there are two mineral water springs in Gánovce and Filice.

The Gánovské travertíny National Natural Monument covers two hectares. The Dolina Gánovského potoka Site of European Importance is also located near Gánovce. It is home to Carpathian travertine salt meadows and salt-tolerant vegetation associated with mineral springs. The landscape themes therefore range from travertine deposits to habitats connected with mineral-rich water.

Hiking Routes Starting in and Passing Through Gánovce

The green-marked “Zámčisko” hiking route runs from Poprad railway station through Gánovce, the Starý Juh settlement and Kvetnica to Zámčisko. It is 9.5 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. You can use this approximate time frame when planning; check trail conditions and markings on site.

Another tour option is the “Po stopách neandertálcov” circular route, which passes through the Gánovce Geopark and returns via Poprad. The “Zámčisko” route specifies a distance and approximate duration; the second tour is a circular route that returns via Poprad. Check local conditions before setting out on this route as well.
