Spišská Teplica offers a range of ways to explore culture and nature on a trip. These include a church with a Gothic predecessor, a municipal museum and a Calvary in the Cistercian style. The Spišskoteplické slatiny protected area also shapes the character of the village. These themes offer different ways to tailor your trip to your interests, from architectural and local history to religious sites and protected wetland habitats.

Church and local history

The Roman Catholic Church of the Most Holy Trinity was built in 1875 on the site of a 14th-century Gothic church. A historic stone tabernacle has also been preserved in the church to this day. The construction date, predecessor church and tabernacle offer specific points of reference for exploring the ecclesiastical history of Spišská Teplica. The dates help distinguish two building phases: the Gothic predecessor dates to the 14th century, while the present-day church was built in 1875.

Municipal museum visits by appointment

The Spišská Teplica Municipal Museum has a permanent exhibition on the history of the village and its Cistercian heritage. While the church offers a glimpse into local history through a single sacred building, the museum explores this history in its own exhibition. Visits are possible year-round for visitors who have made an appointment; arrange your visit before you arrive. The municipal museum also provides space for creative workshops, lectures, exhibitions, discussion groups and seminars. Its thematic scope therefore includes various educational and event formats in addition to the permanent exhibition.

Calvary and views

The Calvary in the Cistercian style comprises 14 stations, including a chapel. It offers a different cultural perspective from the church and museum, focusing on the stations and chapel of the site. Above the Calvary, you can enjoy views of Spišská Teplica, the surrounding area and the peaks of the High Tatras. The site is accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and visitors arriving by car. The number of stations, the chapel and the viewpoint offer different points of interest if you are interested in the religious and scenic aspects of the village.

Routes through Spišská Teplica

A circular route passes through Spišská Teplica to the agricultural cooperative; the ascent begins from there. Along the circular route, there are several places to eat, as well as benches and informative educational signs. Another circular route leads from Poprad through Lopušná dolina, via Spišská Teplica and Svit, and back to Poprad. This also lets you explore the village as part of a longer circuit. As route conditions can change, it is advisable to check the route and conditions before setting out.

Protected wetland habitats

The Spišskoteplické slatiny are part of the Natura 2000 network, cover approximately 24 hectares and are located in three different places within Spišská Teplica. The designated area is subject to the fourth level of protection. One of the most important protected habitats is a habitat of European importance comprising base-rich fens. Unlike the cultural sites, this natural feature focuses on protection status and distinctive habitats. The information about its area and distribution also shows that it comprises several locations within the municipality, rather than a single central viewpoint.
