Velký Slavkov is presented as a starting point for visitors to the High Tatras. The village itself also offers several points of interest for planning a trip: the Burich archaeological site, two churches with different building histories, and the Adventure Golf Veľký Slavkov mini golf course. While Burich is associated with a hillfort from the La Tène period, the churches showcase architectural forms from different centuries. This makes it possible to explore the mountain region, local history, and leisure activities without focusing the stay on just one theme.

Getting here and using Velký Slavkov as a base for the High Tatras

Its proximity to Poprad–Tatry International Airport makes Velký Slavkov easy to reach. From here, the High Tatras can be reached by the Tatranská elektrická železnica, bus, or private transport. Public transport and private transport are therefore available as different options. Check timetables separately if you plan to take the train or bus on a specific date.

Burich: hillfort, cycle path, and views across the basin

The Burich archaeological site, with a hillfort from the La Tène period, lies on an inconspicuous hill. A marked cycle path leads from Velký Slavkov to Burich. The path goes up the small hill, which offers views across the Poprad Basin. Burich is also a popular destination for walks among local residents and visitors. The archaeological site gives the destination a historical dimension, while the views across the basin add a landscape element. Check the route conditions locally before setting out on a bike ride, as cycling infrastructure may change.

Churches and historic architectural styles

The Evangelical church was built in 1786–1788 as a towerless Toleration Church. It is a hall church with a semicircular termination: the first term refers to the layout, the second to the shape of the building’s end. As a medieval counterpart, the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle dates from the 13th century. It was built around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries as a single-nave Early Gothic structure and has largely retained its original medieval form. Its south portal is an example of Gothic stone carving. The Slavkovský štít (2,452 m) also bears the name of Velký Slavkov. A written account of a three-day ascent to the summit in June 1664 has been handed down.

Mini golf and a rest stop

Adventure Golf Veľký Slavkov offers an 18-hole mini golf course, presented as entertainment for families and groups. The traditional Slovak restaurant Salaš Slavkov is located on the same site. Mini golf and the restaurant complement the archaeological and church destinations with a leisure activity and a place to eat. In April 2024, the municipality described a rest stop it had built about 2.5 km beyond Velký Slavkov, in the direction leading away from the cemetery. It has a wooden shelter, seating, and a fire pit.
