Veľké Vozokany lies in the valley of the Širočina watercourse. Several distinct topics stand out here when planning a trip: the reservoir, St. Nicholas Church, the Lion Monument, archaeological finds and organized cultural events. The waterside landscape and history can be considered as separate interests during your stay. If you are looking for hotels for a trip to the village, it may help to decide first whether you are most interested in including bodies of water, architectural history, memorial sites or local cultural life.

Reservoir and waterside landscape

The reservoir near Veľké Vozokany covers 23 hectares. Its bed is uneven, and its depth ranges from 1.0 to 4.0 metres. The area and depth range convey two different measures of the body of water. The lake is home to carp, zander, grass carp, pike, catfish, crucian carp and bream. Fishing is restricted in the marked spawning area; check the local rules in advance.

Church and Lion Monument

The dedication of St. Nicholas Church to Saint Nicholas is documented as far back as 1308. Originally Gothic, the church was given a Baroque makeover in 1742. It is also listed in the Central Register of the Monuments Fund of the Slovak Republic (ÚZPF) under number 1562/0. A Lourdes chapel stands above the church on the road to Nemčiňany.

The Lion Monument brings together an event and a later memorial. In 1734, a stone obelisk was erected at this site to commemorate the victory and honour the fallen. In 1896, it was replaced by a bronze lion by sculptor Vojtech Markup. The monument commemorates the battle fought in 1652 northeast of Veľké Vozokany by the old grove, in which the Turks were defeated. The sequence from 1652 to 1734 to 1896 helps distinguish the historical event from the later design of the memorial site.

Archaeology and local cultural life

A Neolithic settlement of the Linear Pottery culture in the Močiar field yielded a stone axe, a clay loom weight and a perforated flint pendant. These finds broaden the picture beyond the later histories of the church and monument to the village’s prehistory.

The LIPA ensemble is dedicated to preserving and revitalizing village traditions and folk songs. Each year, it rehearses a play and performs it in the surrounding municipalities. The ensemble draws on works by Slovak authors for its plays.
