Červený Hrádok brings together sacred art, winemaking history and hilly terrain. The Church of St. George and other religious works of art give local history a visible theme; vineyards and small wine cellars represent another facet of the village. The surrounding area is also part of planning a trip: the Mlyňany Arboretum is located nearby.

Landscape and Surroundings

Červený Hrádok lies in hilly terrain near the valley of the Širočina stream. As part of Upper Požitavie, the village is located in one of the northernmost extensions of the Podunajská nížina. This geographical setting links the landscape of the village with the wider region without reducing the character of the place to a single excursion destination.

The Mlyňany Arboretum is located nearby. It was founded in 1892; its park now covers 67 hectares and is open year-round. When planning a trip, this makes it possible to include a nearby park alongside the local cultural attractions. There is also a Fit Park in the village.

Church of St. George and Religious Art

The Church of St. George is a single-nave Neoclassical building, with its tower integrated into the structure. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave. Its furnishings include elements of the Secession style from the period when the church was built. The church also contains two folk pilgrimage crosses from the second half of the 19th century.

Other religious works of art are found at various locations in Červený Hrádok. A statue of the Most Holy Trinity stands in the center. In the vineyards, there is a chapel dedicated to Saint Urban. Unusual gravestones depicting saints stand out in the cemetery. A roadside masonry shrine houses a wooden sculpture of Saint Vendelin from the second half of the 19th century. The roadside statue of the tormented Christ is a folk work from the Neoclassical period, dated 1835.

Historical Traces and Wine Tradition

The history of the Kopanice cadastral area also gives the village an archaeological connection. Finds there include ceramic material and chipped stone tools. In 1970, a settlement of the people of the Channelled Ware culture was archaeologically investigated in Kopanice.

Another historical episode dates back to 1599: during the Turkish raid, residents hid in underground passageways known as “lochy.” These passageways connected houses and streets.

The wine tradition also goes back a long way. In 1714, Červený Hrádok had a brewery; vineyards were recorded in the village in 1715 and 1720. Distinctive small wine cellars continue to shape Červený Hrádok today. The village is also part of the educational trail along the Wine Route of the microregion. This combination of winemaking history, built wine cellars and the route gives the theme several distinct facets in the village landscape.

Culture and Travel Planning

Residents wear traditional costumes at various cultural and commemorative events. A church fair is usually held on the feast day of Saint George. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check locally in advance for the exact date.

The Požitavie–Širočina cycling route also passes through the cadastral area of Červený Hrádok. Before setting out, check the current route and conditions. Between the Church of St. George, historical traces, wine tradition and the hilly surroundings, you will find a range of ways to shape your trip to Červený Hrádok.
