Zlatno in the Tribeč Mountains: Trails, Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Zlatno
Landscape of the Tribeč Mountains
Zlatno lies on the southern slopes of the Tribeč Mountains. The northern part of the village lies within the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area, where protection level 2 applies. In addition, part of Zlatno belongs to the Tribeč Special Protection Area in the Natura 2000 network. These designations apply to specific areas and frame the landscape around the village from two perspectives: as a protected landscape area and as a bird protection area. This provides a nature-focused setting for your stay; the routes described range from hiking trails to challenging MTB routes.
Hiking and cycling options
The Tajomný chodník Tribečom starts in Zlatno beside the Môj obchod shop. There are six routes to choose from: three cycling routes and three hiking trails. Once downloaded, the audio guide also works offline. On the yellow route, it guides you from Zlatno to Čierny hrad, helping you find your way along this stretch.
There is also a puzzle game on the yellow route to Čierny hrad. The hiking trail is listed as 6.5 kilometres long and takes about 2.5 hours—a useful estimate for planning your time. The 049 – Tribečská hrebeňovka is on a different scale: this challenging MTB route for experts is 78.5 kilometres long and includes sections on trails and forest roads. Above Zlatno, it continues towards the Javorový vrch area. The details clearly distinguish the hiking route and its approximate duration from the long expert route. The green cycling route 5115 – Sľažany–Zlatno–Solčany runs through the Tribeč Mountains and passes Čierny hrad.
Gold panning and Čierny hrad
The origins of Zlatno are linked to gold panning in the Stránka stream. A document from 1424 records that Mikuláš Forgách was granted the right to pan for gold in the stream’s sand deposits. This brings together a local origin story and a specific historical date.
The ruins of Čierny hrad, near Zlatno, date to the late 12th century. The remains stand on the summit of a 568-metre-high, cone-shaped hill on a side ridge of the Tribeč Mountains above Zlatno. Historically, the castle served as a guard castle between Gýmeš and Hrušov. Its location, elevation and former purpose give the site several dimensions: the ruins are connected both to the topography of the Tribeč Mountains and to the history of the castles in the surrounding area.
Museum and remembrance tradition
The local museum in Zlatno presents the history of the municipality through photographs and household and farming equipment. One room is dedicated to the geographer Michal Lukniš, considered one of the founders of modern Slovak geography. The museum therefore presents local everyday and agricultural history alongside a tribute to an important figure in Slovak geography.
A report from August 2024 describes how hundreds of people have walked the partisan trail between Zlatno and Skýcov every year since 1988 to honour the heroes of the Slovak National Uprising. This date and annual tradition form a distinct part of local history alongside gold panning and the medieval castle.
