Nemčiňany can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: its location along the Rohožnícky Stream, the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, and its wine-growing history. The village lies in the northern part of the Pohronská pahorkatina, in the stream valley and on a spur of the Štiavnické vrchy. This gives your travel plans a local character shaped by landscape, historic buildings and inherited culture.

Location and Nature

The Rohožnícky Stream and the surrounding ridges shape the village’s geographical setting. Kráľová studnička is one of the sources of the tributary stream near Nemčiňany. The surrounding mountains also offer a connection with nature: they are suitable for mushroom picking. Waterways and mountain scenery thus provide distinct ways to explore the area.

Church and Historic Monuments

The Romanesque section of the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel was completed in 1249. The church is a single-nave building with a semicircular apse; “single-nave” describes a layout with one nave, while the apse gives the building a semicircular end. Between 1716 and 1720, the church was remodeled in the Baroque style. These dates mark distinct construction phases in the same church: the Romanesque section was followed by the Baroque remodeling. The church is considered one of the oldest in the wider surrounding area.

Other surviving historic monuments in Nemčiňany include the bell tower and the family crypt of the Kostolániovci, with its cellar. Well-maintained serpentine paths lead through the mountain park to its summit and to the family crypt of the Kosztolányiovci. The mountain park and a specific historic destination are thus linked in the village’s history.

Figurine and Early History

The Nemčinianska Venuša is described as a flat, headless, stylized female idol made of fired clay. It has been dated to approximately 5,600 years ago. The original was discovered in the cadastral area of Nemčiňany in 1982. The figurine offers a different historical perspective from the church: its dating goes far back before the medieval history of the building. A stay focused on cultural history can therefore encompass different periods without conflating them into a single history of the building or village.

Wine Growing and Local Traditions

The Kosztolányiovci established the first vineyard with fine grape varieties in Nemčiňany. A chapel is located in the Rohožnické vineyards of Nemčiňany. A second chapel, on the site of the former Nemčinianske vineyard, was restored in 2012. The event Dni vína Nemčiňany is also closely connected with wine: it is a selected nomination exhibition for the National Wine Salon of the Slovak Republic.

Local customs include raising the Maypole, Stavanie mája, an old spring tradition. One dated example of local event culture is the Fašiangová zabíjačka, held on February 14, 2026. At this event, traditional slaughterhouse specialties were offered, including roasted hurka sausage, klobása sausage, ribs, kapustnica and obar. These dishes are therefore associated with a specific past event.

Fishing Waters and Activities

The VN Nemčiňany fishing water is located near Nemčiňany, covers 3 ha and is 1.0 to 3.0 m deep. It is home to carp, zander, grass carp, pike, catfish, crucian carp and bream. The fish species present may change; check local fishing regulations before visiting. If you are deciding between fishing and mushroom picking during your stay, these offer two distinct nature activities: the described fishing water and the surrounding mountains, which are suitable for mushroom picking.
