Turany: Discover Local History and Nature
Accommodation in Turany
Turany offers two clear themes for planning your trip: local history and the Turany–Černík nature trail. Churches, a museum, and monuments offer insights into different periods and forms of local remembrance; the circular trail focuses on nature and history. If you plan your stay around these interests, you can treat architectural history, museum topics, and a walk as separate activities.
Turany–Černík Nature Trail
The nature trail is accessible year-round and is designed as an easy, self-guided circular route for pedestrians. Its themes are nature and history. You can start the trail in Turany at the railway station or in the square in front of the municipal office; the first information boards are at both of these designated starting points. The trail lies at the foot of Malá Fatra National Park. The two starting points give you a choice when planning your day, while the circular route and its themes determine the character of the walk.
If you would like to combine a walk with historical and nature-related content, this offers a different format from the attractions located within the town. The churches and museum have their own distinct focuses; the nature trail is a self-guided circular route suitable for an easy walk. You can choose the focus of your stay based on whether you would rather explore architectural and local history or set aside time for an outdoor walk.
Churches and Architectural History
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Gall (Kostol sv. Gála), together with its bell tower, church cemetery, and surrounding wall, is listed as a national cultural monument. Its building history goes back to two different dates: the church was built in 1300 or 1304 on the remains of a Gothic chapel dating from around 1157. The church also contains a rare Gothic altar of St. Catherine. According to its provenance, it is said to have been brought from Spišská Kapitula.
The present-day Evangelical church building was built in 1933 on the site of a Toleration church erected in 1786. The church was consecrated on May 6, 1934. Together with the much older history of St. Gall, it offers a comparison of different periods of construction and religious traditions in Turany. These dates provide a concrete point of reference for anyone interested in the history of the churches.
Museum and Memorial Sites
The local museum is located in the cultural center on Budovateľská Street in the south of Turany. It preserves documents on the town’s history and present day, and displays a collection of local fauna and flora. Its permanent exhibitions cover Old Turany, nature, fish and fishing, Miloš Alexander Bazovský and Turany, and the history of skiing in the Turiec region. There is also a children’s area, historical technology, clothing from the past, and the history of sport. The topics range from nature and fishing to local history, sport, and everyday life in the past.
Organized groups can arrange a museum visit with the Turany Municipal Office by phone at +421 917 216 268 or by email at kultura@turany.sk. In the town center, a monument features a bust of Miloš Alexander Bazovský. There is also a monument to the victims of the Second World War in the square in Turany. These two memorial sites complement the museum’s subject matter with monuments in public spaces.
The landscape offers another perspective: springs, wells, and other types of wetlands emerge in places on the alluvial fan. Together with the nature trail at the foot of Malá Fatra, this provides a nature-focused aspect alongside the historical themes of the churches, museum, and monuments.
