Museums: Literature, Nature and Artists’ Lives

The Múzeum Andreja Kmeťa is housed in the first SNM building, dating from 1908. Its permanent exhibitions focus on two different subjects: Kmetianum explores the work of Andrej Kmeť, while Príroda Turca presents the nature of the Turiec region. On 16 August 1994, a decree by the Government of the Slovak Republic declared the building a national cultural monument.

The Múzeum Martina Benku opened in 1972 in the house where the artist spent the final decade of his life. It includes a gallery as well as the artist’s furnished study, studio and bedroom. The gallery and the rooms associated with Benka’s home and workplace are presented side by side.

The Literárne múzeum SNK is located in the centre of Martin, in the first historic building of Matica slovenská. The building was declared a national cultural monument in 1961. The permanent exhibition is devoted to the history of Slovak literature and book culture, linking literary development with the history of books.

The Múzeum kultúry Čechov na Slovensku is housed in the home of the notable figures Jiří Horák and Anna Horáková-Gašparíková. The Múzeum kultúry Rómov na Slovensku is located on the grounds of the Múzeum slovenskej dediny in Jahodnícke háje. These museums bring different cultural subjects and historic places into focus.

Martin District has 274 registered monuments. The museums mentioned offer a range of points of interest, from nature and literature to book culture and the history of individual artists and cultural communities.

Castles and Historic Sites

After 1320, Sklabiňa Castle became the seat of the Turiec County administration. It is about a 15-minute walk from the village of Sklabinský Podzámok. Events are held on the castle grounds, including a castle festival associated with the castle’s historic conquest. If you are planning a visit around the festival, check the dates in advance; the event programme may change.

The trail to Blatnický Castle starts at the end of Blatnica and follows a yellow-marked nature trail through Gaderská dolina. Its starting point and trail markings provide practical guidance for planning this castle visit.

Veľká Fatra: Landscape and Hiking

Jasenská Valley is a year-round recreation centre on the Turiec side of the Veľká Fatra, below the northern slopes of Lysec. Lysec is 1,381 m high; from its main summit, there are panoramic views across this part of the Veľká Fatra. Alongside museum and castle visits, the landscape and viewpoint give the area a distinct focus.

The via ferrata trail to Martinskè hole is 4.8 km long, gains 780 m in elevation and takes approximately three hours to climb. It starts at the terminus of the public transport service in Martin-Podstráne and ends at the blue-marked hiking trail in the Bazová area, near Martinskè hole. Check access conditions and any seasonal closures before setting off.

The Martinské hole cycling route runs from Vrútky to Martin via Chata na Martinských holiach and is 22 km long. It starts in Vrútky and ends in Martin; both endpoints have a bus stop, a railway station and a car park. The available information differs by route: elevation gain and approximate ascent time are key details for the via ferrata trail, while the cycling route is described by its course between two towns and the facilities at its start and end.
