Lipovec at the Foot of the Lesser Fatra
Accommodation in Lipovec
Between the Riverbank and the Mountain Foothills
Lipovec lies in the Turiec Basin, on the right bank of the Váh and at the foot of the Lesser Fatra. Most of the municipal area consists of deciduous and mixed forests. The riverbank, forest and mountain foothills give the area a distinct connection to nature. There are several options to consider when planning a stay: hiking trails, a regional cycling route and seasonal activities at the Široká pond nearby.
Hiking Around Panošiná
Panošiná is a prominent mountain, 1,021.8 metres high, in the southern Lesser Fatra above Lipovec. A yellow-marked hiking route leads from Lipovec past the monument and on to the summit. The yellow trail marking and named waypoints give the route a clear course: Lipovec is the starting point, the monument lies along the way, and Panošiná is the destination. A monument erected in 1948 stands below the mountain.
Another hiking option is the ascent along the trail to Kľačianska Magura. Nature and views of the entire Lesser Fatra define this climb. When planning, you can choose between the yellow-marked route via Panošiná and an ascent that offers sweeping views of the mountain range. Memorial and hiking gatherings are held on Panošiná every year. The annual ascent commemorates the events of the fighting near Strečno during the Slovak National Uprising.
Forests and Protected Areas
The Lesser Fatra National Park lies directly within the cadastral area of Lipovec and is subject to the third level of protection. The Hajasová Nature Reserve is also within the cadastral area. It protects forest communities in lower-lying areas of the Hoskora catchment. Numerous species of forest plants, fungi and animals find suitable living conditions here.
Forests are more than a defining feature of the landscape: they also frame the natural areas around Lipovec. Visitors interested in the landscape can find specific points of reference among the different forms of protection: the national park is identified by its level of protection, while Hajasová is known for protecting forest communities in lower-lying areas. Local nature-related features thus range from the broader setting to a particular forest area.
Cycling, the River and Seasonal Recreation
The Turčianska cyklomagistrála passes through Lipovec and is suitable for trekking bikes and mountain bikes. As route conditions can vary, it is worth taking them into account when planning a ride. The route offers a different way to experience a stay than the hiking trails: it is a cycling route through the area, while the yellow-marked hiking trail passes the monument and summit.
A river trip from Lipovec to Strečno is listed as taking about two hours along a 14-kilometre route. The duration can vary with water conditions; seasonal water conditions should also be taken into account. If you include such a trip in your plans, factor the conditions into your schedule in advance.
The small Široká pond nearby offers opportunities to relax and take easy walks in nature. In winter, the pond freezes over and provides space for ice skating. Whether the weather is suitable is key to this seasonal outing. Walks by the pond, the river trip and the cycling route therefore appeal to different interests and do not all involve the same type of activity.
Local History and Recreation
The bell tower of Lipovec stands at the southern edge of the municipal cemetery in the centre of the village. It was built in 1959 to replace an earlier bell tower dating from 1838. The tower houses a late Baroque bell dating from 1780. The two dates tell different parts of the building’s history: 1959 marks the construction of the present tower, while 1780 gives the age of the bell.
The leisure and sports centre in Lipovec provides residents and visitors with a place for sporting, entertainment and recreational activities. It is open to children, young people, adults and seniors, as well as local organisations and interest groups. The centre is therefore another way to spend leisure time in Lipovec; sporting activities are also offered there.
