Košťany Nad Turcom: Building History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Košťany Nad Turcom
Košťany nad Turcom lies on the floodplain of the Turiec River. Historic buildings reflect different chapters in the village’s history, while two cycling routes include the municipality in their itineraries. This offers two themes for your stay: cultural history and cycling. The buildings can be compared by period and design, and the routes by their itineraries and the types of bicycles they suit.
Local History and the River Floodplain
The earliest documentary records of Košťany nad Turcom date back to 1323, when the village was mentioned as “villa Coschan”. In the 18th and 19th centuries, agriculture was the main occupation of the inhabitants. After the abolition of serfdom in 1848, crafts and trade began to develop. The village’s history thus traces a path from an early form of its name to changes in the occupational structure during the 19th century.
Buildings and Their History
The manor house in Košťany nad Turcom is a single-storey country residence dating from the second half of the 18th century. It was created by altering an older building and is designed in the Rococo-Classicist style. Its L-shaped floor plan and stucco-decorated façades add specific features of its form and design to its historical context. Visitors interested in architecture will find both its building history and details about its floor plan and façade decoration.
Kúria No. 214 is a national cultural monument with ÚZPF number 566/1. Here, the focus is on its heritage status and inventory number, whereas the description of the manor house focuses primarily on its period, style and form. The two buildings can therefore be distinguished by different features.
Rodný dom Jána Páričku was originally built as an inn belonging to the Juštovský family, by the roadside, in the first half of the 19th century. It later became a meeting place for Slovak representatives of the national revival movement from Martin and the surrounding area. Since September 1997, a plaque honouring Ján Párička has been affixed to the building. Its history links its former function as an inn with the regional revival movement and a dated commemoration.
Rodný dom Andreja Polonca was built in 1843. In comparison, this construction date is more precise than dating the Párička house to the first half of the 19th century. Both buildings therefore belong to the same broad period, but differ in how precisely they are dated.
Cycling Routes by Itinerary and Bicycle Type
The itinerary and bicycle type are useful points of comparison for the cycling routes. The Znievska cyklocesta runs from Turčianske Teplice to Martin through Košťany nad Turcom and is suitable for trekking and road bikes. The complete Tanková cesta cycling circuit includes Košťany nad Turcom and is suitable for mountain and trekking bikes. The routes therefore differ both in their form—a route between the stated endpoints or a circuit—and in one of the bicycle types specified for each. Trekking bikes are suitable for both; road bikes are specified for the Znievska cyklocesta and mountain bikes for the Tanková cesta.
