Valča – Hiking Trails, Snowland and Local History
Accommodation in Valča
Valča lies where the slopes of the Malá Fatra Mountains give way to the Turiec Basin. Hiking trails, cycling, seasonal attractions and historical themes offer different starting points for planning a trip. You can consider whether to focus on a marked route, activities associated with a particular season, or the architectural and cultural history of the village.
Landscape and nature
The Malá Fatra Special Protection Area for birds, code SKCHVU013, overlaps with practically the entire upper third of Valča’s cadastral area. The sulfur spring Smradľavá voda rises in the Slovianska Valley; the Brčná ponds are also located there. Fishing is possible at the ponds. If you plan to fish, check how it is currently organized there before your trip.
Hiking trails and cycling
Hiking trails lead from Valča to the Maríková saddle. From there, you can continue along the ridge of the Lúčanská Malá Fatra to Martinské hole or Kľak. Another route follows a blue-marked hiking trail through the Valčianska Valley: from Valča, via the Majbíková saddle, onward to Kunerad. Maríková and Majbíková therefore represent different route connections. If you choose one of these hikes, check the trail conditions in advance, as they can vary seasonally.
For a cycling trip, the marked Turiec cycling route, Tanková cesta, offers a separate option. It passes through Valča and follows a mostly paved road intended exclusively for cycling. This route is primarily for cycling, while the trails over the two saddles mentioned above are described as hiking connections.
Another hike leads from the parking lot by the Snowland ski resort to two partisan bunkers above the Valčianska Valley. The route follows a yellow-marked turnoff after the entrance to the Šindelná Valley. The starting point and route sequence provide a concrete guide to this hiking destination; here, too, trail conditions can change.
Seasonal attractions at Snowland and YETILAND
Snowland has groomed ski slopes covered with artificial snow. Winter operations are seasonal. Visitors have access to free parking spaces for 1,200 cars and 10 buses; these capacities may change. In summer, Snowland offers tennis courts and a golf academy.
YETILAND, a children’s park with attractions in both dry and water areas, is located in the Valčianska Valley. These include trampolines, inflatable castles, slides and rope obstacles; in summer, the offerings also include a water park. The activities mentioned therefore differ in their seasonal focus: Snowland features ski slopes in winter and tennis and golf in summer, while YETILAND features a water park in summer. Opening hours, seasonal access and individual attractions may change. Check the latest information before your visit.
Architectural history and culture in Valča
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is considered a defining landmark of Valča. It stands on the site of an older church dating from the 11th century. The Olejkársky dom was built in the early 19th century in a classical folk style. The Kaštieľ Valča manor house dates from the second half of the 19th century and was built in the classicist style. It is listed as a national cultural monument under ÚZPF SR reference number 638/1.
The historical trades of Valča include oil trading, known in Slovak as olejkárstvo. Oil traders and saffron merchants from Valča were known in what was then Tsarist Russia, Persia, Spain and Istanbul. Local cultural traditions also include the ručníkový, patekát, kožúškový and čardáš dances. Taken together, the architecture, trading history and dances offer different ways to explore the history of the village.
