Martin brings together cultural history and nature and outdoor activities. In the city, museums, a gallery and the National Cemetery offer different ways to explore history and art; in Turiec, castles shape the historical landscape, while the Gader Valley and Šútovo Waterfall are distinctive natural attractions. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Martin, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: will you spend most of your time visiting museums and historic buildings, or will you also include cycling routes and natural attractions?

Museums, Art and Cultural History

The Andrej Kmeť Museum is located in the first building of the Slovak National Museum. The museum asks larger groups to book their visit in advance; booked groups are given priority over visitors without a booking for admission and guided tours. This reservation policy is an important point to bear in mind when planning a group visit.

The Turiec Gallery is housed in the former County House on Námestie SNP in Martin, built in 1740. Its permanent exhibition is devoted to 20th-century Slovak art and includes works by figures associated with the Turiec region. A separate section focuses on Mikuláš Galanda’s painting, graphic art and applied art. The National Cemetery of Martin is another cultural and historical site designated as a national cultural monument.

Museum of the Slovak Village

The Museum of the Slovak Village in Martin is Slovakia’s largest open-air ethnographic museum. It comprises 129 residential, agricultural, technical, social and religious buildings; visitors can enter some of the interiors. It offers a different perspective on cultural heritage from the art collection at the Turiec Gallery.

Since 1991, the museum has hosted events as part of the Ethnographic Year. These include demonstrations of traditional production and crafts, as well as customs and folklore. Dates vary for individual events, so take them into account when planning your visit.

Castles with Distinctive Histories

Sklabiňa Castle and Zniev Castle offer different historical and geographical perspectives. Sklabiňa served as the seat of the Turiec County governors for 450 years and is open year-round for an entrance fee. Check access details before travelling. Zniev is considered the oldest known castle in the Turiec region and stands at an elevation of 985 metres. Sklabiňa’s long administrative role and Zniev’s regional significance and elevation are the main points of distinction.

Gader Valley, Waterfall and Cycling Routes

The first eight kilometres of the Gader Valley, from Blatnica to the junction with the Dedošova Valley, follow a well-maintained asphalt road suitable for road bikes and scooters. As road conditions can change, it is worth checking them locally. The valley is also home to the Čertova brána rock formation and Mlynčekovo, with numerous small watermills in a variety of shapes and designs.

Šútovo Waterfall is 38 metres high and the tallest waterfall in the Malá Fatra. Another cycling option is the route over Martinské hole: it connects Vrútky and Martin over 22 kilometres and leads to the Chata na Martinských holiach mountain hut at an elevation of 1,250 metres. The hut offers snacks and refreshments; check what is available before planning your trip.

A Seasonal Experience

Yetiland in the Valčianska Valley is a family park with dozens of attractions for children, including trampolines, inflatable castles, slides and rope obstacles. In summer, a water park is also available. If this part of the park is important to your plans, take the seasonal difference into account.
