Sutovo: Waterfall, springs and hiking trails
Accommodation in Sutovo
Waterfalls, springs and hiking trails define Sutovo’s connection with nature. A prominent landmark is the Šútovský vodopád: it lies at an elevation of 830 meters in the Krivánska Malá Fatra, about four kilometers north of Šútovo. At 38 meters, it is the highest waterfall in the Malá Fatra. The trails lead to more than this single destination, continuing into the Šútovská dolina and to Mojžišove pramene.
Waterfall and springs in the Šútovská dolina
From Šútovo, you can reach the Šútovský vodopád via a blue-marked hiking trail. Mojžišove pramene lie at an elevation of 1,140 meters and emerge from a rock face on the eastern slope of the southern peak of Steny. Their water feeds the Šútovský potok and the waterfall. This connects the visible waterfall destination with its natural inflow, the springs farther up the terrain.
Mojžišove pramene can be reached from Šútovo through the Šútovská dolina, passing the Šútovský vodopád. The waterfall is therefore also on the route connecting to the springs. The different elevations help put the destinations into perspective: the waterfall lies at 830 meters, and the springs at 1,140 meters.
Hiking trails and route length
A summer variant of the Šútovská dolina educational trail continues from the Šútovský vodopád through steeper mountain terrain to Mojžišove pramene and Chata pod Chlebom. It is almost nine kilometers long. Its length is therefore quite different from the route leading only to the waterfall. The distance and steeper terrain are useful points to consider when deciding how much ground you want to cover on your excursion. There are six information boards along the educational trail.
The mountain huts also have distinct roles: Chata pod Chlebom is a destination on the summer variant. Visitors can stop for food and drinks at Chata Vodopád on the way to the Šútovský vodopád. For an excursion centered on the waterfall, this place to stop offers a different point of reference from the longer route that continues to the springs and Chata pod Chlebom.
Protected landscape and natural monument
The Šútovská epigenéza is a distinct natural area. It covers 52.19 hectares, is protected at the fourth level, and forms part of Malá Fatra National Park. The natural monument lies at the confluence of the Váh and the Šútovský potok, in the cadastral areas of Ratkovo and Šútovo in Martin District.
A trail from the local football field in Šútovo leads to the summit of the Šútovská epigenéza. This gives the natural area its own specified access point. Those interested in landscapes and protected areas will find a destination here that differs from the waterfall or the springs; when planning, consider these as distinct places and route questions.
Historical traces and finding a hotel
The town’s history includes mills and smithies, as well as a developed basket-weaving craft. These historical details add a cultural aspect to the area’s natural and hiking appeal, without reducing it to its trails and water destinations.
If you are looking for a hotel in Sutovo, let your travel plans guide your choice: are hiking destinations and landscapes your priority, or would you also like to explore the town’s history? The waterfall, springs and historic craft tradition give a stay different thematic highlights.
