Jalšovík: Hills, a Streamside Landscape and Local History
Accommodation in Jalšovík
Jalšovík lies in hilly terrain; the first written mention of the village dates to 1418. The landscape along the stream, the named natural areas, and the municipal information on leisure and tourist services are also relevant when planning your trip. The historical name forms refer both to Jalšovík as a municipality and specifically to Horný Jalšovík.
Stream and Hills
The municipality of Jalšovík is bordered by hills to the east and west; the steeper slopes are covered with oak forests. The Jalšovík Stream flows through the municipality and rises below Žobrák. West of Dolný Badín, it flows into the Krupinica. Its source, course through the municipality, and confluence therefore describe different sections of the same watercourse.
The Jalšovík Stream and its tributaries form a naturally flowing, strongly meandering stream in hilly terrain. The riverside vegetation is mostly continuous and locally transitions into riparian woodland. This description is based on the municipal land-use plan for 2025. Meanders are pronounced bends in a stream; the term helps explain the watercourse’s winding shape.
Several named natural areas add to the picture. Horné lúky is a complex consisting predominantly of woody vegetation on the slopes of the Jalšovík Stream valley above the municipality. Kopanica – Stránička – Hrušťava – Stádliská is an extensive complex of semi-natural grassland and herbaceous vegetation. It lies on the slopes of the left-hand section of the Jalšovík Stream valley and its tributaries, on the ridge between the valleys of the Jalšovík and Vrbovok streams, and in the right-hand section of the Vrbovok valley. Well-developed hornbeam-oak stands can be found in Uramov laz.
Local History and Cultural Traces
Jalšovík was first mentioned in writing in 1418, under the name forms “Jelsoukh” and “Jelsouk.” The name of Horný Jalšovík is attested as “Felsew Alsok” in 1542 and “Felseo Jalsok” in 1578. The early mention and the later forms mark different historical reference points: the first concerns Jalšovík, while the two later ones refer specifically to Horný Jalšovík.
The municipality of Jalšovík ceased to exist at the end of the 16th century; at the beginning of the 19th century, Jalšovík is mentioned again as a settlement. Cultural traces include folk songs from Jalšovík, selected from songs collected there that had not previously been published. They were performed by residents and by people originally from Jalšovík. This selection of songs adds a musical perspective to the local history.
