Čekovce lies east of Krupina in a valley through which the Čekovský potok flows before joining the Krupinica. The landscape and the village’s history offer two different points of reference when planning a trip: its valley setting on the one hand, and its surviving architectural and memorial traces on the other. For travelers who want to shape their stay around cultural history, the houses in the village center, religious landmarks, and the history of the residents provide specific topics to explore.

Village Character and Folk Architecture

The surviving houses with typical elements of folk architecture form a relatively cohesive group in the center of Čekovce. The interest lies not only in each individual house, but also in how the buildings relate to one another in the village center. Houses with typical elements of this architecture have also survived from the early 20th century. Together, these details provide both a spatial and a chronological framework for the village’s architectural heritage.

Church, Commemoration, and Local Memory

The church is located in the center of the village. The first Holy Mass was celebrated there in the autumn of 1923, and the church tower was completed in 1925. These dates mark two distinct milestones: the first service in the church in 1923 and the completion of the tower in 1925. The early religious history can therefore be placed in context through two clearly dated events.

The memorial sites also reflect different aspects of the past. The municipality had a cross erected in the cemetery in 1895. The memorial to those who fell in the First World War in Čekovce was created in 1936. The locations and dates distinguish the two: the cross is in the cemetery and is associated with the municipality as its sponsor; the memorial commemorates those who fell in the war.

Čekovce also has a memorial room that presents the history of life and the cultural heritage of the village and its residents. Its subject broadens the view from individual buildings and dates to the lives of the people and the culture of the village.

Work, Notable Figures, and Historical Connections

Hemp cultivation was among the former sources of livelihood in Čekovce. Men also practiced woodcarving in earlier times. These activities complement the history of buildings and memorials with agriculture and crafts: here, the village’s history can be traced not only through buildings but also through past ways of working.

The paleontologist Jozef V. Luňaček was born in Čekovce in 1844. While teaching in Krnišov, he became interested in geological research. His biography thus links his birthplace, Čekovce, with a later period in his professional life in Krnišov.

Bzovík is also connected with the village’s history: the early history of Čekovce is linked to the Provostry of Bzovík. The monastery in Bzovík has a surviving Gothic sacristy that was converted into a chapel. Its fortifications with corner towers and a visible moat have also survived. The historical themes therefore include both the connection to the provostry and the monastery’s religious and defensive features.

The village’s architectural history also includes an older house in Čekovce that is owned by the municipality and was renovated and partially reconstructed in 2014. Alongside the surviving houses with elements of folk architecture, this more recent renovation is another feature of the village’s built environment.

Cycling to Čekovce

For cyclists, the route information describes different aspects. One cycling route to Čekovce runs along roads, asphalt, and field and forest tracks, and is suitable for mountain and trekking bikes. Another cycling route leads from Krupina through Bzovík to Čekovce. While the first description specifies surfaces and suitable bike types, the second shows the route through the places named. Check the route information before setting off.
