Sebechleby – Wine-Growing Culture and Folk Architecture
Accommodation in Sebechleby
Sebechleby combines folk architecture and wine-growing traditions with an ethnographic perspective on local customs. The built heritage is especially concentrated in Stará Hora, a folk architecture reserve and part of Sebechleby. Other points of interest include the Sebechleby–Stará Hora Ethnographic Museum and St. Michael’s Church. When planning your visit, you can distinguish between architectural sights, seasonal information services and individual wine and food experiences.
Stará Hora: Wine-Growing Architecture in the Reserve
The settlement of Stará Hora has approximately 130 winemakers’ houses and wine cellars, 87 of which are classified as national cultural monuments. The protected folk architecture includes one- and two-room winemakers’ houses with columned loggias, as well as cellars carved into tuff stone. The original wine cellars can be visited, although access arrangements may vary from one place to another.
The settlement’s architectural history also includes the Baroque Chapel of St. Urban, built in 1732. St. Urban is regarded as the patron saint of wine-growing; his feast day is the occasion for the annual Svätourbanské slávnosti celebrations in Stará Hora. In this part of Sebechleby, buildings and cultural connections to wine-growing come together.
Museum, Customs and Folklore
The Sebechleby–Stará Hora Ethnographic Museum is part of the reserve. It presents traditional costumes, as well as folk traditions and customs passed down through generations. The idea for the small museum emerged in 2003, with the aim of showcasing the earlier way of life and traditions of Sebechleby. The ethnographic perspective thus complements the houses and cellars with themes of everyday life and cultural heritage.
The Geľovianka folklore group is dedicated to the customs, songs, dances and costumes of Sebechleby and the Hont region. Its repertoire also includes grape processing and vineyard work. Together with the municipality and the local association, the group organizes the annual Svätourbanské slávnosti in Stará Hora on the feast day of St. Urban, patron saint of wine-growing.
Wine, Cuisine and Guided Tours
Oberačka po sebechlebsky is a festival of wine-growing, folk gastronomy, tourism and entertainment. The 2025 edition’s program included a tour of tuff-stone cellars, as well as tastings of varietal wines and Burčiak. If you are planning to attend on a different date, check the program announced for that occasion.
The tourist information office in Stará Hora offers information and guided-tour services in July and August. It can also arrange tastings and tours of the museum or the folk architecture reserve. Arrange any desired tours or tastings before your arrival. A visit to the St. Urban cellar includes a tasting of local wine alongside a typical local dish; tasting arrangements may vary.
St. Michael’s Church and the Surrounding Landscape
St. Michael’s Church in Sebechleby is an example of Baroque religious architecture. Its single-nave interior ends in a polygonal presbytery, whose windows retain Gothic tracery dating from the 15th century. The church also houses a Neoclassical organ from 1898. Its Baroque style, Gothic windows and late 19th-century organ offer three distinct architectural features to look for when viewing the building.
Sebechleby is located on the Krupinská planina plateau. Together with the distinctive architecture of Stará Hora and St. Michael’s Church, this creates a sense of place shaped by both wine-growing architecture and religious heritage.
