Medovarce combines a distinctive valley and river landscape with a local history shaped by its church, watermill, wine-growing and historic routes. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Medovarce, you can consider the village through these different interests and decide which aspect of the destination appeals to you most.

Landscape in the southern part of the Krupinská planina

Medovarce lies in the southern part of the Krupinská planina, in a valley enclosed on all sides. The Krupinica flows through the municipal area. This location connects two scales: its place within the wider landscape and its immediate setting by the valley and river. If you want to understand a destination through its landscape, you will find a clear geographical framework for your stay here. This setting offers a different way to approach the village than its individual buildings and historical landmarks, which shape its local history.

Evangelical church and historic furnishings

The Evangelical church is Medovarce’s distinctive landmark and was built in 1832. Its furnishings include a Classicist organ dating from 1820, built by an unknown master, and a baptismal font made of hewn stone. The font is stylistically attributed to the Late Gothic and Renaissance periods and dates from around 1500. The chronology makes the church especially interesting for visitors who want to compare historical architectural and artistic forms: the baptismal font is around three centuries older than the organ, which in turn predates the church building by twelve years.

The area around the church offers another point of interest. A lime tree more than 500 years old stands nearby. In one place, the striking church building, its historic furnishings and a very old tree come together. This offers a different perspective on Medovarce than the valley landscape: the focus here is a specific landmark with several layers of history.

Mill, historic routes and work in earlier times

The Pavol Hajnal watermill dates from the 19th century; part of its original technical equipment has been preserved to this day. It offers a glimpse into the technical side of local history and provides a different focus from the church, with its religious art and furnishings. Together, the two buildings represent different themes: sacred architecture and historical technology.

The Zlatá cesta is part of the history of local routes. It ran as a sunken lane along the edge of Medovarce; a historic inn stood beside it. These two points of interest expand the local history to include former routes and places to stop. They are historical landmarks, not an indication of a currently marked trail or an operating inn.

Wine-growing and beekeeping

Agriculture also forms part of Medovarce’s historic character. Wine-growing played an important role; it included several varieties of own-rooted vines known as Samorodáky. Beekeeping is another historical tradition. It was widespread in Hont County in the 17th and 18th centuries, and bees were also kept in Medovarce. Medovina, or Medovica, was made from honey. Wine-growing and honey-based drinks thus point to two different aspects of work in the past: cultivating vines and processing honey.

Planning your trip

An older regional description locates a warm spring with a constant temperature of about 20 °C on the main road toward Rykynčice. If you plan to include this spot in your itinerary, check its condition and access before visiting. You can distinguish the themes that make Medovarce a destination: the church brings together architectural history and historic furnishings, the mill represents technology, wine-growing and beekeeping tell of agriculture in the past, and the Krupinica and enclosed valley provide the landscape setting. This makes it easier to focus your hotel search on what interests you most about Medovarce.
