Terany lies 144 metres above sea level in a flat area at the transition between the Štiavnické vrchy, Krupinská planina and Ipeľská pahorkatina. The Štiavnička flows through the village. If you are considering Terany as a destination for a stay, its landscape, cycling route and local history offer concrete points to help you decide and search for a hotel.

Landscape and Location of Terany

The location combines flat surroundings with a transition between three named landscape regions. The Štiavnička, which flows through Terany, adds a river to the local scenery. The elevation, terrain, transition between landscapes and river offer different perspectives for placing Terany geographically.

In terms of climate, the municipal area belongs to a warm zone with a moderately dry subclimate and mild winters. This climate classification complements the information about the elevation and landscape. Together, they provide a concrete picture of the geographical conditions that you can take into account when choosing your destination.

Cycling Route 032 through Terany

Cycling Route 032, the Turčiansko–Kremnicko–Štiavnická cyklomagistrála, runs from Dudince through Terany and Hontianske Tesáre and continues to Svätý Anton. This makes Terany part of a route connecting several places between these named destinations.

The route passes through fields, meadows and villages, offering views of the surrounding landscape along the way. Both the sequence of places and the landscape character of the route are relevant to your planning. If you include the cycling route in your trip, check local route conditions before setting off; they may change.

History and Local Traditions

Terany was formed in 1944 by the merger of Dolné Terany and Horné Terany. The two names appear in different historical records: Horné Terany is mentioned in 1298 under the name TERYEN, and Dolné Terany in 1387 under the name KYSTERIJEN. These dates place the names of the two settlements in their historical context; their merger to form Terany took place many centuries later.

The Church of the Mercy of God also has a clearly documented chronology. Construction began in 2002, and the church was consecrated on 6 April 2013. The two dates mark the start of construction and the later consecration, making the more recent history of the church a distinct part of the local character.

Construction of a manor house in Terany began towards the end of the 19th century. Its foundations appear to date from an earlier period.

Historically, agriculture was Terany’s main livelihood; viticulture was also practised. The traditional costume also has a regional classification: it was a sub-variant of the Lišov costume. Agriculture, viticulture and clothing shed light on different aspects of local history and complement the architectural dates with cultural associations.

Transport and Getting Around

Road I/66/E77 runs through Terany and connects Budapest with Warsaw. It was formerly also known as “Magna via”. Railway line 119 is also relevant for understanding the transport network: it supplements Terany’s transport links, but is currently used exclusively for freight traffic. This distinction is important when considering the transport information for your trip.
