Súdovce: Ginkgo, History and Local Flavours
Accommodation in Súdovce
Súdovce lies in the valley of the Veperec stream, on the southwestern edge of the Krupinská planina. The village brings together clear points of interest for different kinds of travellers: a legally protected ginkgo, the history of a former manor-house park, an Evangelical church and historic wine-growing sites. There are also tastings and the Súdovská cycling route. This makes it a place where natural history and heritage sit alongside regional products and a more physically demanding option.
Ginkgo and manor-house history
The ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is legally protected, and its age is estimated at around 260 years. It once stood in a park with a manor house. The former park received an award at the 1884 World’s Fair in Budapest. Only part of the manor house’s south wing remains. The history of the tree and the estate thus offers two concrete ways to look at the village’s past: protected nature and architectural remains.
Evangelical church and sacred art
The Evangelical church was built in 1932. It has a neoclassical altar with a painting by D. Šuba from the same year. The painting depicts Jesus on the Mount of Olives. The church therefore brings together a clearly dated building and a work from the same year with a specifically named subject. The style of the altar and the religious subject of the painting offer two different perspectives on this attraction: architectural history and sacred art. If your main interest is local heritage, the church complements the older manor-house history with a building from the 20th century.
Wine-growing and regional products
Wine-growing is part of the village’s history: the municipal seal from 1668 shows that it was the most important local activity at the time. The vineyards are concentrated around Súdovce, in the Chrástavky and Zajfrtky areas. A new vineyard with a wine cellar has been established in Borháze. The visitor offer in Súdovce includes guided tastings of its own products and a guided tour of production with a live pressing demonstration. The tastings include at least 14 types of oil, four varieties of homemade mustard and other home-produced goods. The historic wine-growing tradition and the tasting offer give you two different points of interest: a historical development and today’s products. If you plan a tour or tasting, check the current dates in advance.
The Súdovská cycling route
The Súdovská cycling route runs from Dudince through Lišov and Súdovce and back to Dudince. It is 33 km long and is rated as one of the more demanding routes. How challenging the ride is for you may depend on the route conditions and your experience; it is a good idea to check the latest conditions before setting out. Along the route are viewpoints at Staré vinice, Berený háj and Kôrčiny. Alongside the 33 kilometres, these three named viewpoints provide additional points of scenic interest. When choosing the focus of your stay, there are two distinct considerations: the ginkgo and manor-house history, as well as the church, appeal to travellers interested in heritage, while the cycling route—with its length, more demanding rating and viewpoints—adds a sporting dimension.
