Discover Tărlungeni: Landscape, History and Culture
Accommodation in Tărlungeni
Tărlungeni combines the mountain scenery at the foot of the Ciucaș Massif with local history and living traditions. As you plan your trip, you can explore a range of interests: the circular route towards Șaua Teslei, nature across the wider commune, and cultural and historical sites in the village of Zizin. This makes it possible to experience the destination through its landscapes, history, or local culture, depending on your interests.
Landscape and Circular Route
Tărlungeni lies at the foot of the Ciucaș Massif; the commune is also home to the distinctive Piatra Laptelui ridge. The protected Ciucaș area lies within the wider commune and gives visitors the opportunity to observe rare wild animal and plant species, including species considered regionally endemic. Nature here therefore extends beyond the landscape around the village center.
The circular route between Tărlungeni and Șaua Teslei starts in the village of Tărlungeni and passes by Lacul Tărlung-Săcele and through Cheile Babaruncăi. Its highest point is below Vf. Piatra Dudului, at an elevation of 1,368 meters. The lake, gorge, and high point offer different landscape features along the route and provide useful landmarks when choosing your route.
Historic Sites and Collections in Zizin
In Zizin, the Biserica Sfânta Treime (Holy Trinity Church) and a traditional house are among the historic monuments in the commune of Tărlungeni. The church was built in the 18th century, while the house dates from the 19th century. Together, the buildings represent two distinct periods in local history.
The Căsuţa Amintirilor village museum in Zizin houses archival photographs, items of national dress, and household objects collected by Romanian, Csángó, and Roma residents. The collection brings together images, clothing, and everyday objects connected with the history of several population groups. It complements the historic buildings with a glimpse into inherited ways of life and cultural traditions.
Călușarul and Boricza are among the folk dances currently representative of Tărlungeni. Alongside the collection items and historic monuments, local traditions are also in focus. During the interwar period, Zizin was designated a spa resort with thermal springs; this designation is also part of the village's history.
Regional History
A dispute between Tărlungeni and Prejmer over the use of water from the Tărlung River is dated November 4, 1484. The conflict over water use is one of the specific historical milestones associated with the area.
Tărlungeni is part of the historic Șapte Sate and thus the wider Țara Bârsei. Historically, these areas, together with the Bran region and Făgăraș and Sibiu, were known as “mocănești.” This regional context broadens local history beyond individual buildings and events.
