Viștișoara and the mountain hiking trails

Numerous mountain hiking trails lead from Viștișoara to the ridge of the Făgăraș Mountains. The Moldoveanu Peak is also a destination for mountain hikes from here. A specific summit destination such as Moldoveanu provides a different point of reference for planning than the more general orientation of the mountain ridge. If you are looking for a hotel in Viștișoara, your planned hiking destinations can help shape the focus of your stay. In addition to mountain destinations, the trail descriptions provide different points of reference for trailheads, valley connections, and landscape features.

A place with a historic function

Viștișoara began as a hamlet of Viştea de Sus. During the months when the villagers worked in the forest, they stayed there overnight. This origin describes how the settlement was connected to forestry; it provides a historical counterpoint to the hiking destinations named today.

Named trails and their connections

The marked Viștișoara–Muchia Drăguşului–Valea Sâmbăta hiking trail connects Viștișoara with the Valea Sâmbăta valley via Curmătura Răcorelelor. Another hiking trail, Izvorul Părintelui Arsenie Boca–Muchia Drăguşului–Căldarea Răcorelelor, starts from Viștișoara at Pârtia Drăguș and heads toward Muchia Drăguşului. The first trail emphasizes the connection to the valley; the second names the trailhead at Pârtia Drăguș and the direction toward Muchia Drăguşului. If you are weighing up trails for your stay, these offer different points of reference: a route between named places and a specific trailhead with a stated direction.

High-altitude landscapes

Lake Viștișoara lies at 2,040 metres below Șaua Viștișoarei, in the Viștișoara cirque. The Răcorele Waterfall, also called Ferestrăul, is formed by the Ferăstrăul stream and has a drop of approximately 40 metres. A hiking trail also reaches an alpine zone from which the wild area of Pietrei Roșii is visible. The lake, waterfall, and view of Pietrei Roșii offer different points of reference: elevation and cirque, stream and drop, and a view from an alpine zone. At the lake, the elevation and landform complement each other; its location below the mountain pass also places it in the mountain landscape.

Trailheads and trail features

The Viștișoara–Șaua Răcorele hiking trail starts in Viștișoara next to county road DJ 102G. Its first 3.5 kilometres follow a forest road that ends beyond the Lunca Largă meadow. This identifies both the trailhead and a specific section of the route. On the Viștișoara–Valea Sâmbăta hiking trail, the section at La cheie includes a short stretch with safety cables. The trail descriptions thus provide different practical points of reference: the forest road at the start of the route toward Șaua Răcorele and the short section with cables at La cheie. Before setting out, check current trail and safety conditions, especially if you plan to take the section with safety cables.
