Zărneşti is an important northern gateway to the Piatra Craiului protected area via Valea Bârsei and Valea Prăpăstiilor. The national park also includes areas belonging to Zărneşti. This gives you specific points of interest to consider when planning your trip: Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor gorge, the visitor center, a cycling route and the rail connection from Brașov. These destinations and routes serve different purposes and offer various ways to shape your stay in Zărneşti.

Gorge and trail

Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor is a 3.9 km-long gorge section. Limestone layers accelerated its formation; the largest section in Valea Prăpăstiilor measures 1.7 km. The 3.9 km refers to the entire gorge section, while the 1.7 km refers to its largest subsection. The path through the gorge is considered easily accessible for children and people with disabilities. The figures thus distinguish between the extent of the entire landscape feature and one part of it.

Visitor center and park topics

The Piatra Craiului National Park Visitor Center is in the administrative territory of Zărneşti, on Valea Bârsei Mari, one kilometer from the town. A circular exhibition provides information about the national park's flora, fauna, geology, ridges and scree slopes, caves, local communities and tourist trails. The topics range from nature and geological formations to the people and trails in the protected area. A traditional shepherd's hut is also on display there. The center therefore offers a different focus from the gorge: instead of a single landscape feature, it presents a range of national park topics.

Cycling route and trail signs

An easy 12 km cycling route offers distinctive views of the northwestern escarpment of Piatra Craiului. Numerous torrent valleys, characteristic of this limestone massif, cut through the slope. In the center of Zărneşti, a signpost at the tourist information center points toward Plaiul Foii; the route follows Valea Bârsei Mari out of town. After one kilometer, a marked hiking trail branches off toward the hermitage near Colții Chiliilor. For navigation, different figures matter: 12 km is the length of the cycling route, while the one-kilometer mark indicates where the hiking trail branches off.

Choose between different routes

When weighing up the routes described here, they differ both in how you travel and in their focus. A trail through the gorge is considered easily accessible for children and people with disabilities. The cycling route is also rated easy, but covers 12 km and focuses on the northwestern escarpment. The marked hiking trail, meanwhile, branches off toward the hermitage near Colții Chiliilor. These differences can help you choose which activities you want to shape your stay in Zărneşti.

Getting there by train

Zărneşti is the terminus of the 28 km-long branch line 203 from Brașov to Zărneşti. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable before your trip. This lets you factor the train connection into your plans alongside the natural, exhibition and trail destinations.
