Petersberg: Fortified Church and Dealul Lempeș
Accommodation in Petersberg
Petersberg (Sânpetru) offers two clearly distinct local themes for trip planning: the fortified church complex of Sânpetru and the Dealul Lempeș botanical nature reserve. One draws attention to architectural history and defensive architecture, the other to the landscape and protected communities of living organisms. As you prepare your stay, you can tailor your interests to whether history, nature, or an event date is your priority.
Fortified Church: Design and Building History
The fortified church complex of Sânpetru has a west-facing choir, a bell tower to the east, and an oval fortified enclosure. The inner perimeter wall also has an oval ground plan. It is eight metres high and features loopholes and openings for pouring pitch. The orientation, ground plan, and wall dimensions give the complex a clearly recognisable architectural profile.
The pre-Reformation chapel is in the northern part of the complex, decorated with valuable wall paintings dating from around 1400. The sequence matters when it comes to the building history: the medieval church was demolished in 1794; the fortified church was completed in 1797. This distinguishes the later building chronologically from its medieval predecessor. The condition of the complex was recorded as good on 1 August 2025.
Dealul Lempeș: Protected Area and Nature
The Dealul Lempeș botanical nature reserve lies on the hill of the same name, also called Dealul Cetății, within the administrative areas of the communes of Hărman and Sânpetru. It covers 274.5 hectares and is classified as a protected area of national interest under the name Dealul Cetății–Lempeș. This distinguishes the hill’s alternative name, Dealul Cetății, from the name of the protected area.
The area was designated to protect postglacial xerothermic plant communities. The term refers to plant communities from after the Ice Age that are adapted to warm, dry conditions. Protected fauna includes specimens of the common buzzard, the lesser spotted eagle, and the deer. The nature theme therefore encompasses both the botanical basis for the protection and the named animal groups.
Route, Paragliding, and Events
The Via Transilvanica passes through Sânpetru; approval to include the section was reported on 7 August 2024. The route as a whole is intended for hiking on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback. Check the current route alignment before planning.
A municipal post dated 27 March 2009 named the Dealul Lempeș–Sânpetru area as a suitable location for paragliding. If this activity is of interest to you, check the current launch and operating conditions before making specific plans.
In the 2025 events calendar, Sânpetru cu bun gust was listed as a monthly gathering of local producers, craftspeople, and members of the community. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the current events calendar before travelling.
